Hi.

On the back of my AV Reciever there are Video Inputs & Outputs.

What is the purpose of routing the video through the AV reciever then to the TV.. if any???

Thanks

1. Some people have more components than TV inputs (like me).

2. If you run audio through the A/V receiver, then you'll need to switch it when you change "inputs". Let the receiver change the video inputs/output at the same time. (This may not always be the only video switching necessary - depends on the "video output" and whether the receiver "converts" the signals so they all go out on component video for example, or at least all composite and S-video go out on S-video - ie, you may need to change inputs on your TV.

3. If you have a long run from your components to the TV (as do I), you only need one or two long cables to the TV and you can connect the components via short ones to the receiver.

One should have no concerns about running composite or S-video signal, or even component video (480P - DVD) through a receiver. There will be no degredation in quality.

As for HD signals, one should look for a receiver that has a minimum of 25 MHz bandwidth switching, and preferably more, since "more is better".

So it doesn't boost the signal at all.
Basically it just acts as a pass through...

Right, while you were typing I added some more information to my previous post...

It does a little more than "pass through" since some new Receviers allow you to send composite signals out via S-video output or the lower signals out by component video output. There is, however, no "upconversion" that takes place, it's simply done to minimize the number of connections to the TV.
