View Full Version : Basement Theater Rooms

I have been thinking about this lately in preparation for my home theater room setup. I realize that the reference to a basement here is vague since a basement can vary in size and design. It can be just slab walls, non finished or fully done walls with wood or carpeted floors. So when you post I'd appreciate how finished yours is. Aside from the obvious, (water damage), can anyone see a reason why a home theater should not go in the basement? Will dampness, improper insulation, or moisture affect HDTV or any other electrical component? I may have only two choices, the living room or a basement room in my new house, so I'd like to know how to prepare accordingly. TIA.

As long as you don't get any water damage and you place a dehumidifier in the basement, you shouldn't have any electrical problems just because you're in the basement.

Basements can have the advantage that they're less likely to transmit as much noise (sound) to the other parts of the house, especially from the Subwoofer (since it's likely to be sitting on a firm floor).

It's also typically easier to control the light in a basement (bright light is not good for most HT applications).

I have mine in my basement, see "HT2" in my signature, or the gallery.

If you havn't done so already, see the FAQ post "If only I'd have known" - the last section is on HT.

57U,
Did you finish your basement by yourself and put the hardwood flooring in? Looks real nice.

57U. What's in the glass jar to the left of your TV? I have one just like it filled with matchboxes from around the world.

leadvocal. I did all the hardwood flooring in my house - about 1500 sq ft on 3 levels (it's a relatively small house). I also did some of the trimwork. The drywall and studding I left to others.

DoubleDaz, yes that is a demi-john filled with matches from various hotels and restaurants from around the world. I have over 1000. Haven't been adding to the collection much lately because there's a lot less smoking, but that's fine with me.

I never did smoke, but when in the Air Force, we decided that would be kind of cool as I traveled all over. Since I retired in '93, we haven't added much either and many places do not personalize matchboxes anymore.
