Just when I thought pictures tubes were on their deathbed I find a company coming out with a new generation of direct view CRTs. Has any one heard of XDI or what manufacturer is going to use this technology in their televisions?
If they can really reduce the depth and weight of a direct view TV and be price competitive as they claim I think this will be very popular.

I don't really know what any of that stuff means. It all seems pretty technical and a bit over my head with out doing some sort of research or something on the subject. My guess would be that if it comes to fruition, it will be cheaper for the people making the tv's, not really you and I. Any new technology is going to cost us the consumer more money. If it's new and cool they will charge for it, and someone will pay for it, at least for a while. Then the price may go down. I remember when plasma monitors first came out and they were ungodly expensive(not that they are cheap now). And in my opinion they didn't really look all that great. They look much better now, and the prices are coming down, but I still wouldn't want one on my budget.

I also don't think direct view tv's are any where near thier death bed. There are way too many people that are perfectly happy with a $200 dollar (if that) sanyo tv from walmart. Even if you could get a rptv for that they would not sell that well to the general public. To someone that is not really into the home theater thing they have no real apeal, other than they are big. They are bulky, fragile, need a fare amount of maintenance and are prone to burn in and other things. Not to mention you have to control the lighting in the room, and you can't really play video games one them.

Plasma and lcd is much too expensive and will most likely always be more than a direct view. And unfortunately most people don't care that they are lighter or thinner. If they were cheaper those would be good selling points. There are just too many that would choose a regular tv just to save $50 bucks. For some if it displays a watchable picture and sound comes out of it and it's cheap enough, that's the one that is going home with them. I know some people that if it came down to buying a 600 dollar tv and not watching tv, they would choose not to watch tv.

All this is sort of sad for the technophile, but it is true. And that is why the direct view tv will not go away for a long long time. I work with a girl that just bought a new vcr. I said why did you get a vcr when you can get a dvd player for almost the same money and it looks 10 times better. She said she really doesn't watch all that much tv and just wanted one to record a show every now and then and she doesn't watch movies, so why waste the money on a dvd player. I know this is hard for some of us to imagine, but there really are people like this that exist. We are just going to have to learn to deal with them.;)

I set up a DVD player for my mother-in-law (shes 68)...and she
doesnt like it...she would rather watch her VCR tapes!

I gave my parents a VCR years ago...they gave it back to me after a while and said they never use, they only watch TV.

The house across the street from me has no cable or satellite...they use an antenna on their roof to watch tv. And they can afford cable/satellite.
