I am purchasing a Sony KDP-51WS550 51" tomorrow and it has a buit in ATSC tuner. I currently have analog Direct TV. I know I need a new dish to receive HD channels, but do I need to get an HD receiver from Direct TV also, or will the one in the TV do the job? Thank a lot. I'm new to the HDTV realm.

From what I can find, it looks like it's OTA only.
You will need a DirecTV HD receiver (which normally has an OTA tuner also).

Thanks Ratman. I'm still confused why Sony would put a tuner in the TV if it is practically useless and I still have to go out and purchase a direct TV receiver.
In a few years, due to goverment mandates, a lot of people will have to buy TVs with internal tuners that are "useless".
I for one would prefer an HDTV monitor - leave out the analogue tuner, speakers, etc. Many people use STBs & Receivers for those things.

I agree. I see the TV as a monitor not a complete device. Separate interchangable parts for me. As long as the feed to the display device is consistant, technology can change dozens of times and the technology upgrade is relatively easy and cheap rather than ripping apart a TV to upgrade.

Useless depends on your situation, Here it is not at all useless, I use mine every day.
Wile I do agree in most cases a HD ready tv is a better choice, I am extreemly happy I got one with the tuner. IMHO If you have cable or Sat, you will need a set top box anyway to recieve HD, so hopefully one of those will have the OTA tuner.

Also, Future (and some current) TVs will have "POD" (Point of Deployment). A PCMCIA-like card that the cable companies will provide instead of a STB.

Its that eventually, that gets you,
I understand that your Rodgers cable is way ahead of the curve,
but In my situation, my cable does not even offer any HD content:mad: let alone locals, That I can pull in OTA. :D
In ravenrose's position I would try and see how much the set without the tuner would save, considering it does not look like he is going to use it.
