So let's move ahead about 10 years, say to 2013. Hopefully I'm still alive. Everybody has their 16:9 HDTV's. Will we still be needing to stretch a show from today, or years past? If a 1997 Seinfield is shown, it will be shown 4:3? I'll still be fooling with this damn stretch button for the rest of my life??? Just trying to watch the Simpsons! The 75 World Series? My Family Guy DVD's...UGH!

Actually, even now old shows are being remastered in high-definition widescreen. If you happen to see an episode of "Hogans Heros" you will see how absolutely stunning an old tv series can be. All the old TV series were originally filmed in 35MM and can easily be converted to high-definition. I can hardly wait to see a high definition Star Trek (original tv series) in high definition widescreen.

So the answer to your question is, no, you will not be messing with the stretching controls for old tv shows in the near future.

Although paulszpet is probably correct about most material. Some may still be available in OAR, much like widescreen movies are shown today on 4:3 TVs, some 4:3 stuff may end up being shown with black bars in 10 years. This will then account for a small portion of the viewing, so it won't matter.

True (I think), but still, my 200 or so VHS tapes, and whatever 4:3 DVD's I have now (The new Stones 4 DVD has not even come out yet, and I believe it's 4:3), will all be 4:3, unless they change magically somehow...

Oh well...
