I've currently have component connection and the HD channels are stunning, however, on the SD channels, reception is OK but would like to improve it if possible. I've read the FAQ sections as well as some prior posts here that some people recommend the use of the S video connection to improve the SD channels, but reading the Motorola 5100 instructions FAQ's, it states that this does not help.

My question is there anything I can do to keep the component cables and hook up the S video at the same time. If so, after connecting it between the STB and the RPTV, how does the STB recognize both connections, is it done automatically or do I have to "select" it and how.

Your thoughts are appreciated.

I have the S.A. 4200HD STB.

I have the component hook up going from the STB to one of my HD inputs and the S video to one of the TV's standard inputs.
Both lines are always "active" and to select between the two, I have to select which input I wish to view on the TV via the TV remote.

The catch is, (at least with the SA 4200HD STB) the interactive user guides etc.. are only output via the Component outs.

I also use that set up with a Moto 5100, and my on screen guide works with either S-video out or component. It shouldn't be a problem.

I have a similar problem that I just "fix" or "rigged".
My HD reciever puts out 1080i and/or 480i. While the 1080i looks great the 480i looks real bad. My TV can not hoz adjust 1080i so I could suffer from burn in on 480i being converted to 1080i.
My "fix" was to send variable ( 1080i or 480i ) to two places. The HD 1080i goes directly to the TV. The 480i goes to a $300.00 DVDO scaler and changes it to 480p. That is sent to the other input. The DVDO does a wonderful job of upconverting the SD signals, but it can't do anything to 1080i. All I do now is change the TV input for 1080i/480i or 480i upconverted to 480p.
