Press Release (http://www.scientificatlanta.com/news/03Dec03-1.htm) announcing the roll-out of the 8000HD in Green Bay, WI. Go Packers! :D
Thanks for the link DD.
Rogers released the SA8000 a couple of weeks ago - C$500 after programming credit. They'll start renting it in early 2004 for about C$15/month. (they only got an initial 2000 units, hence the purchase only option to begin with)
The SA8000HD is probably a few months away - still "under testing"...

You know, 57U, I never thought of limited numbers as a reason for a purchase only option and that might better explain the Cox decision when they first rolled out HD here in Phoenix. At the time, the 3100 was kind of ending production and the 3250 was yet to be released. It might make sense that they didn't want to invest in a lot of 3100 stock and then re-invest in 3250 stock. The sure way to limit demand was to price it high and I'm sure that is what will happen with the 8000HD until production matches demand. I know the 8000 has been a real success and I'm sure the 8000HD will be equally successful, though the cost difference is quite large and the user base is more limited.

I just volunteered to Beta test the unit. Otherwise they are planning to roll the units out in January :D .
I can't wait since most of the shows I record on my 8000 DVR are also in HD.
Edit to add: My brother does contract work for the local Time Warner, and he said that they started beta testing the units with employees a couple of weeks ago.

Scott, make sure you keep us posted. I'd almost take a vacation and fly home to Brillion to beta-test the 8000HD. :D

Well I have been selected as a Beta tester. They will be coming on Thursday to set up the unit. I'll keep you all posted.
Woohoo - I finally will get to see CSI in HD (always watch it later on the DVR)

It's all hooked up and working great so far.
The paused image is even damn impressive. Can't wait to use the pause and rewind features during the Packer game on Monday Night.
It is nearly identical to the SA8000. Same box, remote, on-screen display, etc. Has the same issues with lag time as the 8000 too (changing channels, etc.).
I recorded and watched CSI on it tonight. I didn't check the receiver to see if it was 5.1, but it definitely recorded with full surround sound. Flawless picture!
I don't like the fact that it doesn't flip between stretch and normal automatically, but I can live with that. When I am watching a HD channel I have to set the picture size to "normal" and then when I am watching SD I have to switch it to stretch. If I leave it on stretch it stretches the HD image off the screen.
Any questions on the unit?

Just thought I'd let you all know that the User Guide for the SA8000HD is now available on S-A's website (http://www.scientificatlanta.com/consumers/index.htm). You will have to fill out the info for their eClub to view it though. It's only name, email address, and system/city, so it's not too invasive.
