According to a friend that works at ESPN, there have been a number of cutbacks in staff and salaries at Bristol so the HDTV Sportscenter may be delayed as it seems the higher ups are more concerned with cutting costs than a better product.

That would suck if they dont have sportcenter in HD. I mean if they put out an HD channel they should go all the way with it.

I’m hoping that the entire broadcast is in HD. Not just the announcers but the sport highlights (video). Since the majority of the games will not be broadcast in HD anytime soon except for the occasional Sunday, Monday or Special event game I’m not sure what the advantage might be. I’d rather have ESPN commit to more HD game telecasts than to have to sit down to watch Chris Berman in HD and the sports highlights in standard definition.

These are two different issues.

When ESPN has an HD center, it won't be just Sportscenter that is in HD. Their other studio shows would also be.

While it is true that many of the highlights will still be in SD, many of the highlights come not from ESPN but other broadcasts.

Also, there are only a limited number of remote HD trucks that are available at any one time. I've heard that in 2004 the number will double from the current 12 to 24. As each one costs (if I remember correctly) about $8 Million, it is expensive to switch a broadcast to HD. Also, my understanding is that the networks don't own the HD Trucks, which adds to the cost of each event. That is why ESPN can't show the Peach Bowl in HD since ABC appropriated the remote truck for the BCS Championship in HD.

It is unfortunate that (since IMHO sports is the best showcase for HD) it will take so long for a majority of events to be telecast in HD. But these are steps we have to take. I understand CBS only broadcasts 1 game a week in HD, Fox isn't HD yet, so ABC and ESPN are making a nice commitment to us by showing all Sunday and Monday nights' games in HD.

Well finally ESPN’s Sports Center made its debut in HD. Exactly what I was expecting. Almost all the highlights were in SD except for the occasional hockey finals highlight. I’m hoping that ESPN gets moving on this and is able to get more HD highlights in from some of their network counterparts.

Lets see how about baseball highlights in HD from the different network’s that are broadcasting their games in HD to the local fan base. I only say this cause it can be done. Both the Red Sox and Yankees have given permission to COX in San Diego to re-transmit their game series w/ San Diego back in HD. I’m sure once the football season gets underway ESPN HD might be able to negotiate some HD highlights from FOX.

All/most of the Blue Jays home games are in HD.

That’s my point! HD content when it comes to sports has sky rocketed with baseball and will with football. How difficult is it going to be for the local affiliate or Cable company which is broadcasting the games in HD and have it up-linked via a sat to ESPN studios.

I would think if a sports league owned the copyrights like they do in most sports they would be willing to let ESPN get their HD feeds at the same cost as a regular SD feed. On the other hand would ESPN have to payout more to the satellite owner because of the increase in bandwidth?

I dont think they have all the equipment yet to actually record HD sports games and than play them back for Espn. Thats why the hockey game replay on Espn was just SD not HD when they showed it live on ABC. I guess the HD networks will have to work on that so they can show HD playback footage of games in HD. But the more HD that is out there and the more people start to watch it the more other networks will make the switch to HD. I give it another 3 years till it becomes a standard for everyone. :mic:

Considering many cable companies are very slow to add HD channels (I recall ESPNHD isn't even available nationwide yet) and ESPN/ESPN2 recently had a very public rate increase battle with the cable companies, I'd be suprised if the two decided to set aside their differences just for HD highlights on SportsCenter.

I read an article in one of the trade magazines last night which stated ESPN's Digital Center is slated for full completion sometime in 2005. I'd say give the kids at SportsCenter time to get settled and figure out the glitches. Even when you move to a new house across town, it takes you more than three days to unpack and get settled in.
