What is the scoop on these models?
It seems alot of people have been having problems with the light bulb in these units.

Maybe I'm wrong but, I think people who bought it on or before 9/03 have problems with the light bulb. I have the 60 incher and had it for about a month now and I have no problem with it. At first, I ordered the 50 incher and it was in back-order for 8 weeks so I upgraded to 60 because I was fed up with waiting. I checked other forums on models 42 and 50 inchers and there are literally hundreds of complaint. Mainly on the light bulb issue. I didn't see too many complains on the 60 incher.
The tv packaging have assembled date on them. Mine was 10/03.

She told me they only carried this model for six weeks because of the light bulb issue.

After 13 days I had problem with the light bulb on my KF60we610.
The orange led was flashing, and the screen was black.

I have exchange the Sony for a 65" Hitachi CRT, not only because
I had the bulb problem, but also because the black was not black, but grey.
That's weird that your black was not black {but grey}
I have had my KF60WE610 for about 2 months with no problems at all {Ilove it}
My favorite movie is the Matrix and everybody is wearing Black all the time, and I must say their cloths look just as black on my KF60WE610 as they do on my 32 inch Trinatrone, my 48 inch CRT Sony and my 27 inch JVC. Ihave watch this movie atleast 20 times and I must say it by far looks better on my KF60WE610 than it did on my sisters jvc or my other 2 TV's.
you must have gotten an all around bad TV Set, but every company occasionally make one or two.

All sets that are based on technology that passes light through an object, such as LCD and DLP, will suffer from the inability to show true black. Having said this, how the picture is set up will either contribute to this problem or lessen it.
On of the first things a new owner of a large screen tv should do is adjust the set using one of the available adjustment dvds (Digital Video Essentials or Avia to name two). Depending on the set, an ISF calibration may also be warranted. My guess is that your set was not properly set up, and thus a problem that would be less noticeable became more so.
I had my TV Callibrated by a certified ISF technition, It costed a little bit extra but I thaught it was well worth the money. My KF60WE610 looks amazing and I could not be happier with the purchase!!! I have had so many compliments from everyone that see's it, even the rogers technition that installed my HD terminal in my basement was amazed at how nice it looked. I still believe you recieved a lemon because trust me the Blacks on my TV look BLACK not GREY.

Black or white is a very interesting phenomenon. If you have no comparison, if you look at something that you "know" is supposed to be black or white, then your brain will "input" black or white.
As soon as you compare the object to something that is whiter or blacker, you'll immediately see how you've fooled yourself.
Go to a Sony store and look at an LCD right next to a CRT and you'll see what we're talking about. If you don't see them side-by-side, you may never have known.
Some sample tricks of the eye (optical illusions) follow: The first link is really good. In one pattern, you can make black dots appear, where there are no black dots. One pattern futher down, you can make grey disappear even though it's always there.

I dont have to go to the Sony Store I have compared the CRT to my RP LCD right in my basement side by side with the same movie {Matrix Reloaded}!
I own a 48'' Sony CRT TV that use to be in my basement before I moved it to the living room a few days after my Sony 60'' RP LCD showed up. I compared the 2 TV's side by Side and I guarantee if you were at my house looking at both TV's with me you would notice that the RP LCD looks alot better than my 48'' CRT. Even the Blacks!!!
I also own two 32'' Trinatron's and 1 JVC 27'' inch.
I have one Trinatrone in my room, the other is in my sister's room who lives with me, and the JVC is in my son's room.
Me, My Wife, My Sister and probably my Son if he wasn't so young all agree that the KF60WE610 looks much better than every other TV in my house. And even with 5 TV's in the house it's funny how everybody wants to sit and watch the KF60WE610!!!
I only wish I could have this quality of TV in every room of my house.

I bought my KF-50WE610 in October and I haven't had one problem with it. I love it. It's the coolest perchase by far for out new home.

An easy way to evaluate the black level of your TV;
Put in your DVD player "Video essentials"
Menu Entry 15-9, Title 17, Chapter 29.
In complete darkness (your room must be in complete darkness) compare the black from your TV display, to the black of your room.
You will have a good idea of your black level adjustment.

of course, since it produces light..its cant really be BLACK -- but close
i will let you know when i get it
it seems to me like caramelfondant has nothing but bad things to say about the KF60WE610 but I think he just recieved a lemon.
I love this TV and when you recieve yours as long as there is no major issues with it like buzzing or the light bulb problem that I have heard other people had{ I dont know anything about those problems my TV works like a dream come true} I guarantee your TV will make you very happy. it has excellent PQ, very good Black levels despite what some people might tell you, it looks very attractive and I promise everyone that's walks into your house will be amazed and comment on it.
Just last night my best friend came over, he has seen my TV atleast 50 times. When he walked to the basement door he yelled Hi, How are you today I missed you so much! I yelled back what's your problem, why are you so happy to see me!!! he said I'm not I was talking to the TV!!! Now lets pop on some Rainbow Six for Xbox.
Those are the type of comments you will hear,
