View Full Version : Getting out of 16:9

I can't seem to get the HD broadcasts to come out of widescreen. When I am in Component 1 it automatically turns everything into widescreen, including the true HD broadcasts like on the "InHD" channels. When in component, it also seems to take away the capability of using all the features of the TV. I was told PIP wouldn't work with HD, so that one I already know, but the "Arc" button doesn't work, leaving everything broadcast in 16:9 when going through component 1.

I've got the C27V36

Most TVs don't have the ability to change the aspect ratio of HD inputs (720P or 1080i.) HD is 16:9, so I don't understand your question either - why would you want to change?

(Upconverted 4:3 signals also have the black bars as part of the 16:9 image, so they also can't be changed by most TVs.)

I don't know if this helps at all, but I can't get rid of the black bars when programs are broadcast in true HD. As with the InHD channels, I still get the black bars across the top and bottom of the screen, but at a friends house he doesn't get the black bars across the top during HD broadcasts.

Thanks for the quick response.

I worded the original post wrong. My main problem is that (as said right above) when watching HD broadcasts I still have the black bars across the top and bottom. I'm not sure how to get rid of them. Any ideas?

You have a 4:3 TV. HD is 16:9 (1.78:1). Widescreen DVDs are also an aspect ratio that will have black bars (1.85:1, 2.35:1). Black bars are "normal", however, most people who watch a lot of HD or widescreen DVDs have a widescreen TV.

See the FAQs on "Black Bars" and "4:3 vs Widescreen".

If you could get rid of the black bars on your HD programming, everyone would look tall and skinny. Some TVs that have "vertical compression" allow you to "toggle" between these two modes (proper aspect and "improper but screen-filling")
