I need help. I am unable to watch the Sugar Bowl because of what I am told by Cox is a "tileing" problem from ABC. I have a rear projection 57HDX83 Toshiba ,my sistyer has a Sony flat panel XBR and tells me she has no "tileing"problem. We both have Cox cable but she has a Motorola STB that is leased from Cox. We have a Motorola that we bought before Cox was leasing STBs.
What is going on!!! Is it the tv difference, or the STB difference?
Any replies would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,

Please do not "cross post". One post on a subject will do fine. Most of the "regulars" read all new posts.
I assume that what you're referring to is a form of "pixellation". Some TVs - especially larger ones show this more than others (smaller TVs). Also some people pick it up more than others, especially if you know what you're looking for. I'm sure that if you looked at your sister's set, you might see this on her TV too.
One way to minimize the effect is to properly set up your TV - See the FAQ "What you need to do to your new HDTV". Especially turn down the sharpness and Scan Velocity Modulation or whatever Toshiba calls it. These seem to exacerbate pixellation.
No matter what you do, pixellation will occur when there is a lot of movement on the screen (like on sports events or nature shows with a lot of flying birds for example). These are the limits of MPEG compression which is necessary for HD signals.
ABC may also have been having some problems - at the start of the programme I noticed they were 16:9 then "4:3" for a while. Later on they were 16:9 again. I don't watch football, just tuned in to see what the game looked like...
See the following thread:

The Detroit and Seattle stations I can receive also didn't have properly encoded DD5.1 although I watched for several minutes and didn't encounter any audio dropouts during those minutes I watched.

Did anyone notice the poor job by ABC in last nights Sugar Bowl game? There were several time thoughout the game where it would lose its HD reception and would broadcast a few plays in standard 4:3. As always I am disappointed in ABC....they need to take notes from CBS who seem to know what they are really doing
Read the link in my post just above yours.

Sorry about the cross-post. I was a little upset. Cox came today and replaced all three all 3 digital boxes as they were all sending back error signals. I won't be able to tell if this does anything until another football game. The problem I had was not due to any sharpness settings and MNF games have been incredible to watch. The picture jumpiness was so bad it made my wife nauseous. Showtime was fine as was NBC and HBO. Could it be the sidecar doesn't "process" the signal as well as the STB that Cox leases? They are both Motorola. Would the tileing be a result of a weak signal? I hope there are playoffs this weekend and I can tell if any of this works. Maybe it wasn't tileing but something else. It was worse when the camera scanned across
the field and not so bad when the commentators were on.
Again sorry about the cross-post and thank you for your quick replies.
