tivo with another reciever

Hello all,
I currently have a hughes hi def direct tv reciever. If i were to get tivo is there any way i could combine the two. I know i would not be ablel to record in hd but could i still use it and record off of my hughes box. or would i have to do it seperatley???

Not really. If you want to combine it with your Hugh's box to record shows from your satellite (I assume this is what you are wanting to do) then the Tivo will have to be used like a VCR meaning the satellite receiver would have to be tuned into the channel you want to record. If you want to use the Tivo's built in receiver to record shows on local channels then it can be used in its normal capacity. If you want the full benefit of Tivo with your satellite service then you need to get a satellite receiver with Tivo built into it. I think Phillips, Sony and Hughs all make receivers with Tivo. I'm personally waiting for SOMEONE to make an all in one high definition satellite/ota/tivo receiver.

I don't think the first response is true. You can probably use a stand alone TIVO and your satellite receiver. I have TW cable and TIVO and they work together.

Here's what I do. I run my cable from the wall to my HD receiver. Then, I use the composite out directly to the TV, which is where I watch live TV and anything HD. I also use the cable receivers S-video output and run it through my TIVO. I use the analog audio for tivo, and the optical output (through an audio reciever) for sound with HD stuff.

This way, you watch TIVO stuff on one input from your TV (video 1 for me) and use another input for HD stuff. You can only watch one channel at a time (through the satellite receiver), and can't watch one show and record a different one at the same time, but you can alwayse watch a previously recorded show while another show records.

Also, since you have DirecTv (as I do), you can put in a multi-switch and run two coax's into the Tivo inputs so you can record a show and watch another at the same time... OR, record two shows at once, and watch another on the HD tuner... Talk about a weapon for the ultimate couch potato!

I have a similar setup. I have one line going to my HD Tuner and one line going to my TiVo tuner. Its not perfect, but it won't be until DirecTV comes out with their HD TiVo tuners later this quarter.

how many inputs are on it

i have sattilite and ota antenna can i do this too with a series 2 tivo??

Check the back of the unit and see how many Satellite In's you have. If you only have one, then your Tivo only has one sat. tuner and you can't do it. But if you have Satellite 1 and 2, you're in business.

Philips DSR6000. It's pretty old school. I think it was one of the first Tivo units, but it works fine.

I am using a Sony HD-100 receiver in tandem with a Tivo receiver. Both are connected to the satellite and sit on top of each other under my Wega. All I do is use Video 5 to watch tv on the Sony HD box and switch to Video 1 to watch standard tv on Tivo. Its great!

Yep... I've got the same exact set-up. Tivo and a Sony HD100... But they'll both be up on EBay come the end of March when the HD Tivo comes out!

I keep hearing and reading about this great combo coming out sometime soon. I wonder if there will be enough to go around when they first hit the market. Also, I wonder this being the first generation of HD TIVO, if there will be "bugs" to deal with.
I don't mind droping a grand for the unit, I just don't want the hassle of dealing with problems. Does anyone have any thoughts along these lines?

That's the dilemma I find myself in. Word is there should be about a half-dozen of them hitting the market this year. I would like to say that I plan on taking my pick once they all come out, but I know I won't be able to say no to the first one on the market. Hopefully, there won't be too many bugs. Some is to be expected though, but I'm not too concerned.
