and i was looking for a avia/any calibration disk i could find to tweak my new tv. well after looking around for about 5 minutes i find someone actually workign in the dvd dept and asked them where they were. he didnt know so he sends me to a guy that works in the tv dept.
the tv dude asked if i bought a service plan and i said yes and he said they come and do it cuz if i did it id fugg up my warranty blah blah blah you know how the story goes. so here's the thing he tells me that the other guy who sold me my tv forgot to mention. he said i could call them whenever i want and a guy would come and do it for me whenever i want and however many times i want :D . so i think i am gonna be having a lot of fun with this. im gonna be callign this guy every 3 months hahahaha :smokin: and the tv guy told me he does the same thing and he told me to tell them if they start bitching abuot it to just say "HEY I PAID FOR THIS SERVICE I AM EXERCIZING MY RIGHT TO USE IT!" over and over again. :rofl2:
time for me to have some fun guys! i would rather do it myself but why not have a little fun with these jerkoffs lol. my only worry is that they schedule themselves to come at a time i am at work or something that would suck.

Yeah.
Companies suck.
Both Best Buy and Circuit City have discontinued Video Calibration DVDs.
Best Buy has a "private labeled" "setup" package, but I didn't want that. I just wanted Video Essentials, ya know?
So I told them both to go screw themselves and just used the THX Optimizer on Attack of the Clones DVD. It's not quite perfect, but was good enough for "government work".

Of course, you could always order the calibration DVD of your choice online. Who needs Best Buy or Circuit City? ;)
Amazon.com carries all three of the biggies:
- Avia Guide to Home Theater
- Sound & Vision Home Theater Tune-Up
- Digital Video Essentials
(in no particular order)
I got my Sound & Vision DVD at Best Buy about 1 1/2 years ago. I got my Digital Video Essentials from Overstock.Com about a month ago.

You think they are going to come to your house every three months and you also think that they use people who actually know what they are doing? Then I am sorry to say my friend, the joke is on you. After they came to my house and did a convergence, cleaning, alignment, My tv not only looked worse, but when they opened the Tv and cleaned the screen they got some dust and fibers in between the screen and the protective screen which are now visable when I am watching. So, I had to call another company who was referred to me from my fav. audio store. Be careful with these clowns

I have to agree. If your set is working fine, youre better off not letting anyone get inside it. Probably about 1 in 5 techs know what they are doing.

Best buy still carries the setup dvd, it's the sound and vision one, if you still want to buy it at best buy ask for "learning place" for tv's and audio, its like 40 bucks. If you go to borders you can get the same disk without the bby crap for 20 bucks.

so i got m replacememnt tv yesterday and i asked the guy if the person who does the convergence is a best buy guy or if they contract out. they said that store contracts out that to another 3rd party. so yeah! no idiot moron form BB to mess things up. i still did the convergance myself afterwards. i am just gonna look on amazon.com fornthe disk i want. thanks for the referral dragon.

I know they contract the work out, that was the point. They always contract the work out to hacks.....Not a whole lot of money in warranty work, not to mention it takes the repair guy like 8 weeks to get his money for the crappy work he does.

I have heard horror stories from people about getting their equipment fiddled with by these 'warranty' techs....especially with todays sophisticated components.

Read Best Buy's Performance Service Plan (PSP) brochure for video very closely. It has more holes in it than swiss cheese! It does not include any type of scheduled or unscheduled maintenance program for video display products of any kind. In fact, they can charge you if they come out and can not find anything wrong with your set. It's all in the fine print.
I sold these PSP's to customers for the better part of a year while I was working in video at a local Best Buy store. My only selling point to the customer was that it would protect you against the video product completely going on the fritz within that four year period, including other serious problems that could in no way be ignored by a service person as not being a problem. Best Buy in these cases would be obligated to fix it or replace it and I've seen them stand behind this countless times during my year there.
Other than that you can forget it, unless you get hit by a power surge. You are safe there as well. Best Buy will back you up as it is covered under the PSP. I can't tell you how many times I had to jump on other salespeople in my department for telling customers that the PSP covered someone coming out to tweak the set for this and that. Unless it is on the fritz or completely hosed don't count on Best Buy's PSP coming through for you.
Just a word of caution here from someone that has been on both sides of the fence. :-)

When they come out to "calibrate" your tv they do not do the same thing as the calibration dvd's do! All they do is make sure the tv is to manufactures specs. They do not use any professinal color measuring equipment, etc.
If you bought the extended warranty, as always, you got completely ripped off!
I dont know how it is in the states, but here in Canada we have Future Shop which is owned by best buy! There extended warranty is great and I would always buy it, when I baught my Sony KF60WE610 I got the sales rep {who happens to be my bestfriend} to write directly on my reciept that if my T.V does not work that exact same as the first day they delivered it they will fix it, if it cant be fixed they will replace it! They have a no lemon policy and the warranties I have baught over the years have come in handy on more than one occassion. I figure if I am going to shell out over $5000 Cdn dollars then what's a couple hundred more for the piece of mind. I dont think extended warranties are a waste of money because if I had to deal with just sony directly then I would go on a waiting list and who knows when my purchase would get fixed or replaced! besides if you didn't get the warranty and your expensive T.V dies in 2 years just after the manufactures warranty runs out then I bet you would feel ripped off but this is only my opinion.

For the record ... I don't think the service plans are a waste of money either. Even the ones at Best Buy! That is why I was able to sell them and still be able to sleep at night. They do work with regards to major repairs and replacing said product in that 4 year period if it goes on the friz. It may not always be the most pleasurable experience dealing with the service end of these electronics retailers, but in the end more times than not, people get taken care of. I hooked many a folk up with new products as a result of no lemon exchanges and just as many that had not even had their products serviced but one time and were authorized for an exchange or replacement. It is not always cost effective to make repairs to products, so many people get to spend most of their money all over again without the hastle of having to have something sent out for service three times first. :-) I personally have had a massive return in my investment with regards to service plans. CC has lemoned out more products for me than I can count and I get to spend every last penny or the original purchase all over again on whatever. It's a beautiful thing!

ok so i found out a little problem with my set.
when it has a black backround on it i can see a little wavy noisy distortion line running from top to bottom maybe loess than an inch wide and i am starting to see it more and more when there is actual pictures there. its driving me nutz! :( so i figure im gonna put my service plan to work.
if they end up not fixing it or ****king it up more you tink i canget another new tv out of it.

Sounds like it may be a ground loop (or some type of AC interference). The usual cause is an improperly grounded cable TV line.
To verify, find a dark scene in a DVD to display the lines. Disconnect you cable TV coax. If the lines go away, get the cable provider to resolve.

i have everything hooked up to a "monster" power station filter/surge protector. the little blue light says everytihng is properly grounded.
ill try that idea out anyway. thanks for the tip, ill keep you all updated.
