View Full Version : Anything to upconvert interlaced to progressive

So what I'm looking for is something that can automatically sense wheather an incoming signal is interlaced or progressive, and if it's interlaced upconvert it to progressive. Here's why. Currently my receiver accepts all the video signals and sends them all out via component (regardless of input method). My TV only has one component input, but when you switch throught the different inputs with the remote it lists Component 1 -> Component 2 ->... It doesn't say anything in the book, but after playing around I learned that Component 1 is for interlaced and you have to change it to Component 2 for progressive (otherwise you get a double picture). Anyways, if I could find something that could de-interlace anything that came in interlaced that would be one less thing I would have to do to watch a movie. Of course this would only make sense if it did it automatically. If I needed a remote to tell it what to do, it would be pointless. Any ideas? Anybody understand what I mean?

Sounds like what you want is a line doubler. Search around here, I'm sure there are lots of suggestions.

So I think this is what I need http://www.dvdo.com/pro/pro_isp.html, but I'm having trouble trying to figure out how it handles progressive scan input. The only thing I could find that might mean something is a line in the manual that says "Progressive source detection and reassembly of original fields." If it can't hanlde progressive input I'd have to set my DVD to interlaced and let it de-interlace it, but I'd rather let my Denon do the de-interlacing. The only other thing I'd be worried about is how it would react to things changing. All of my video would go into it from one set of cables which and the source is switched by the receiver. I assume it could handle the chaning resoulutions, but I may just e-mail the company and ask them. Anybody have one of these???

HOw about using an HD STB. Most HD STB's have a mode to convert any signal to almost any other format. I haev an HTL-HD and I can set it to send any input format out at 1080i or 720p or 480p. There are also 3 variable modes that do different things. I know Samsung HD STB's have a switch to set the output.

Let me rephrase this...I have several interlaced and several progressive scan video components feeding into my receiver (be it through s-video or component input), they are ALL come out through a single component output and into the TV. When I switch from a progressive to an interlaced source I have to 'tell' the TV otherwise it looks screwy or doesn't work at all. So my main question is, What will something like the IScan pro do with a progressive scan input? Will it just pass it through unaltered, will it improve it further? Will it just mess it up and give me something jumbled? If it makes it better, great (though I doubt that's the case), if it just passes it through, that's fine to (actually that's sort of what I'm looking for). If it messes it up, then I would have two options...1)Send progressive scan video 'around' the IScan to the TV and send the rest through it (not really what I'm looking for, but if it improves SD, then I might take it anyways), OR 2) Tell my STB and my DVD (with Fourdja) to send out an interlaced signal and let the IScan de-interlace the signal. If the picture is as good, this would probably be the option, since one of the the things I'm trying to accomplish is to be able to switch from DVD to TiVo (etc) without having to tell the TV (just the receiver). Also I'd like to take advantage of the RGB input on the TV if it makes a difference.
Hopefully this all makes sense. Does it?

does your reciever have s video out? if it does, and your tv has a svideo in you might be able to use that for the interlased signal.

also I can use my panasonic dvd burner drme30 to take in 480I and output 480P via the component cables, but I do think the 480I via the svideo is clearer than the 480p component.

just a thought also I undersrand the samsung sir t165 may take in 480I and output 480P, or even 720-1080 to the component inputs, might want to check up on that, it does have a few s video ports on it, to do this.

check the pdf on it though, I am unsure for sure what the 165 does.

just a few other options.
