I just ordered the Samsung HLN436W TV from Onecall.com.
http://ww3.onecall.com/PID_20962.htm

Then I saw this in the paper today:
http://products.gateway.com/products/GConfig/proddetails.asp?system_id=dlp56tv&seg=hm

The salesman at Oncall talked me out of cancelling the order, but I have until 7:30am 1/26/04 to act if I change my mind.

I want good PQ for DVD's, HD cable and some X-Box. I don't want crap.

The specs look okay on the Gateway. At least its not an EDTV advertised as an HDTV. What are your thought?

Well, you're getting a much bigger screen with the Gateway, that's for sure! Looks like a super value, til you get to the $200 shipping charge. Even then, it's not bad at all.

1 thing I noticed about the Gateway is the relatively large "cabinet" under it. I think most dlp owners love the fact that we don't have those.

I also LOVE the Samsung's low glare screen. If it were me, I wouldn't buy a tv without it. Be sure the Gateway has that. You might not feel the same though.

Other than that, I didn't notice any glaring differences.

Okay, judging by all the other responses about Gateway products, I decided to commit. I am committed. The Sammy and the new HD cable box arrives Thursday. I cannot return it. I saved about $600 by buying from onecall.com, but I'm so anxious about the fact that I need to like it. No ifs and or buts. eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!

I cannot beleive you buy anything unseen. If a TV is about picture quality why would you not look at it to see if it was good enogh for you? Are you just stupid or are you playing games here....all Sammy's are displayed at CC. Gateways are built by someone else...find out who! Gateway has stores as well. The larger the picture the more it becomes fuzzy. I like a brighter, crisper picture..Sammy has that. Gateway is not a TV manufacturer..their customer service is as bad as it gets..read, read, read,,, then buy. I would not buy a Gateway product after all the screwing they gave me on their computers! Now they make nothing...just throw their name on everything. They are a distributor!

Gateway has been getting quite good reviews. Although not as well known as Samsung DLPs, they have good PQ. Hopefully some magazine can officially review it.

The larger the picture the more it becomes fuzzy. I like a brighter, crisper picture..Sammy has that. Every size TV has to be watched from a certain distance. It will be fuzzy if you are too close. That doesnt mean larger displays have less resolution, they have equal resolution as the smaller TVs. See FAQ on how large a TV to buy.

Also check this screen size calculator

JEFFDUBE: I saw the Sammy and others at CC, GG, Tweeter, and Sears. After I placed my non-returnable order, I saw the ad for the GW DLP. What I wanted to know from others is if I should postpone my order to investigate the Gateway further, that's all.

Even with seeing the Sammy in the stores, you don't always know what the video source is or resolution is. The salesmen aren't always knowledgeable.

spaceist: Those are some good links. The GW guy told me that they didn't know who the OEM was, but that they assembled all parts themselves. They used the same Ti chip that the Sammy used. Now I know.

Also, I chose the 43" because my current viewing distance will be 7 feet. I could have gone larger, but too much is not always a good thing.
