Hello,

I figure that I would post about this movie because I know that some of you will enjoy this movie more then you would think. I will say that it looks extremely crisp and the soundtrack might be the loudest DVD's to date. I know that it got bad reviews and that almost turned me away from renting it, but I like monsters, vampires and hot chicks with guns so I rented it.

When I put in the disc I could not believe how crisp and clean the disk was. The surround sound was crazy on this movie also. Between bullets and monsters your back speakers are really being utilized on this soundtrack.

Something that was quite surprising was the the clean video, I am used to watching many movies in HD and to be honest DVD's aren't up to par and my eyes are spoiled with HD resolution, but the black levels look great on this disc.

I also thought that I would ask this question for some of the Pro's that are on here. I looked on the back of the disk and it says mastered for HD. Does anyone know what this means? I assume it means that when the blue laser HD DVD players come out they will have an easy HD transfer. I thought that 480p was the top resolution a DVD could do (if you have a Pro Scan player), but if you watch this movie it is clearly superior to many movies I have seen of DVD.

Now about the movie! The first thing that I will always say when renting or reviewing a movie is that "it is what it is" you are not going to get an Oscar worthy movie out of a vampire werewolf flick. You will get some interesting and quite deep story lines with sweet special effects. The lead actor is Kate Beckensale "Selene" and she is pretty easy on the eyes in her skintight outfit, and she kicks ass like no other! I will not go into details because I think a few of you might read this and check it out, but one thing that I wanted to give props on is the way they did the werewolf scenes the old school way of actually using real people and not CGI. This adds some aspects that make them look more real then the CGI characters that most of the lazy studios have been using lately, ie. Spiderman, The Hulk.

Enjoy! http://www.sonypictures.com/homevideo/underworld/

Mastered in HD simply means that the master was equivalent to HD tapes - I would assume 1080/24P or something like that. The fact that it was mastered in HD, rather then filmed may have some effect on how it transfers to DVD - filmed material tends to look a bit "smoother" therefore some people equate this with lack of "resolution or quality".

Nevertheless DVDs are 480i and nothing more (excepting "HD DVDs" like T2 that can only be played on computers at this time).

PS DVD players deinterlace to 480P and there are some players that go further in their upconversion to 720P or 1080i, but the original material is still 480i.

I would agree as well that this is an exceptional dvd. One of my personal favs. If you liked "The Crow", "Blade", and "The Matrix" you will love this film ... you get a little bit of each in Underworld. Great story, can't wait for part 2. :smokin:

I agree this movie would make a great demo DVD. It was done very well and really surprised me.
