Will DVI eventually become mandatory? If so, what will the IEEE output/input and the HDMI feature on my Mits 55711 be good for?
Nothing....... That is a casualty of companies competeing for a standard format. Looks like Mitsu and Sony won that one. You have to remember that this is all still a baby in the grand scheme of things. I am sure that there will be many changes in HDTV for years to come.
I believe HDMI is compatible with DVI, plus it carries sound, so don't be concerned. My set "only" has component video and I don't expect to be "out of the loop" for many years, if ever (while the TV works.)
How could that be compatible if it carries sound and DVI does not? That doesn't make sense to me, would the video run through it and you would have to run the sound elsewhere?
It's "backwards compatible". Same way a DVD player can play a DVD and a CD. The audio is simply another wire or two inside the connector.

yes HDMI is backwards compatible with DVI you just wont get the audio portion if your set doesnt have a HDMI input....

By compatible we mean that the video signal is the same so you can get a cable with an hdmi plug on one end and a DVI plug and a SPDIF coax plug on the other end.

If you want to record HD then that is what that firewire port will be good for......
Dont sweat the DVI thing yet, when you cant watch HDTV, then we can all worry about the DVI thing..
