I am new to all this HDTV stuff, and I have a couple questions. First I just bought a Mitsu WS55809 and a JVC Progressive scan DVD player. The DVDs look great! The programming that I get from my Dish Network system is fair on some channels and poor on my locals. I have ordered a Model 6000 with the off air plug in to recieve both HD from the dish as well as off air HD from my locals.

My questions are these.

1) Will the 6000 upconversion feature clear up the picture I am getting on my dish (non HD signals)?

2) Will Dish Network be adding alot of programming in HD like has been the rumor?

3) Is there anything else I can do to clear up the picture quality on my non HD signal dish programming?

Thanks in advance,

Paul

How long have you owned your Mitsubishi? It takes a couple of weeks for the sets to break in and start to look good.

To answer your questions:

1) I have heard both ways. If the signal is highly compressed, I doubt it will look any better. Garbage in = Garbage out.

2) I'll believe it when I see it.

3) Get your set properly calibrated. It makes all the difference in the world.

Thanks for the reply,

We have had it for about 2 weeks now. I would say that it does look a little better as of late, but I figured we were just getting use to it. Close ups of faces are the worst. You see a bunch of "gousting".

THanks,

Paul

An update,

The dish 6000 is working great for us! It did clean up the SD signal from the dish and the picture looks better (near DVD 480I quality). The off air HD stuff is great! I get all the majors (ABC, CBS, and NBC) in HD, as well as, multiple other local feeds. The only thing I don't like is the NBC stuff is on a tape delay. The only thing coming from the dish in HD is CBS-HD from LA. It looks very good, but not quite as good as the off air stuff. I am using a simple powered anntena from Radio Shack (upstairs as high as I can get it) and is run through the homes built in cable T.V. system. I get a good 70 to 90 % signal all the time, and I don't get any breakup at all.

All in all, I am very happy with the box, and think its at an ok price for what you get (even better if you have Dish network currently). One thing to keep in mind is that you must have a dish pointed at the 61.5 or 148 location to get any HD programming off the dish.

NBC Olympic feed is the same as Hdnet. Thank Mark Cuban or other wise no HD Olympics at all.

How are you hooking up the receiver to the TV?

You must use either a component video cable (a 3 cable connection that separates the color) or a RGB cable (a cable that looks like a computer monitor cable) to hook up to your TV and switch the signal on the 6000 so the blue light is lit. This connection puts the 6000 receiver in control of sizing the image. I prefer not to stretch images and watch them in their original format. If you do want to stretch them you hit the * button on the 6000 receiver controller. I Just figured that out the other day.

I'm glad to hear that the off air system works. I am in Denver and no one willing to let the TV stations build the transmitter tower. How are you getting the LA station? Do you live there? I have asked for a waiver, but have not been granted one.

Isn't that the kicker, you can't get an OTA HD signal because no one will let them build the tower and you can not get a waiver.
