(probably a dumb question, but be easy I'm somewhat of a newie)

If your TV has 2 component outs, and you have an HD STB, prog-scan DVD player and X-Box, the only way to enjoy all three via component outputs is to physically rotate the cables upon use? Are there no 'splitter'-type gadgets that I could use so all three components are plugged in via component outs at all times?

You have several options.

The first is to get a "splitter". Type "component video splitter" into a web search engine. Some of these even switch automatically, but they're not cheap. Contrary to popular belief, you can also use a splitter from Radio Shack that is designed for composite/audio and it works. Use yellow, red, white for your R/G/B and don't mix them up. Component video cables are no different than "regular" RCA connector cables, but they are typically of higher quality. Don't use regular RCA for a long run. Use the shortest cables possible. If the losses are too high, it may not work, so keep the packaging and your receipt.

Also you could buy three "y-connectors" or "piggyback cables" and use them. Just don't feed two signals at the same time, as you may damage the set.

Edit - Another option for those who have a receiver in the chain is to run the connections to the receiver and then from the receiver to the TV. This assumes your receiver has the necessary component video connections. It'll then act as your "switch"
