I have a Sony hdf-60xbr950 which I'm really enjoying except for one issue that still bugs me. I can notice the pixels on the screen especially when it is a bright image. It looks as if you can see the screen the image is projected on. This may not be it, and it may be just a standard part of rear projection lcd tv's, but I'd like to know if anyone else has noticed this on their Sony (or other) rptv lcd. Note, I'm not sitting 2 feet from the screen, but 12'. I've been told I'm being too critical.

This is commonly known as the "screen door" effect. Supposed to be less of an issue with the later models.

What setting do you have your Sharpness at? You might try turning that down a quite bit (if you haven't already) if it's at the default or normal setting.

I have not yet changed any of the factory settings. I will try reducing the sharpness. I just received a copy if Digital Video Essentials, and I hope after changing the settings as suggested by DVE, these bright pixels will be less of an issue.

View the image on PRO mode. This gives a smoothness effect. I use this effect on everything I watch especially DVDs and HD movies.

ybchoi,
Thanks for your reply, but I find the Pro mode produces a dull image. I prefer Vivid mode. I guess I will just have to learn to live with the bright pixel sitiuation.

By the way, how is the Samsung HD-931 performing? What did you have before this player, and what differences to you see?

You're braver than I am. I found the Vivid mode to be so bright and harsh that it pained me to look at the screen.

You're gonna get closest to the way it should be with Pro, as it turns contrast and brightness to much more acceptable levels as well as turning off all the annoying artificial enhancements. These are likely the cause of the "screen-door" effect that you're seeing. Once you've calibrated it you should get a terrific picture. :)

I use my TV on standard mode with brightness and picture a bit past half and sharpness below half, It looks amazing. I also think pro mode looks a bit dull, I put on the Kiss Of The Dragon DVD by Jet Li pressed pause and flipped through Vivid,Standard and Pro.
Vivid made the color look fake and too over emphasized, and Pro made Jet Li's hair turn from a nice black on standard mode to a dull grey in Pro mode. Sony only suggests using Pro mode on weak material to get rid of the noise on the screen, they suggest Vived for great signals like HD even though I dont really like it, and Standard mode for medium material like DVD's etc...

Hmm, my manual says "Pro: Select to display a picture with minimum enhancements." That's the key there as most of those "enhancements" are just adding unwanted noise to the picture. I agree that out of the box Pro looks a bit dull, but after I calibrated it with DVE... WOW! :D

One thing I noticed is that calibrating it for 480p doesn't look quite right for 1080i sources, I have to turn brightness and contrast up a bit and color down a bit. One of these days I'll get up at 5am and use the test patterns HDNet broadcasts. :)
