I purchased a Sony KP51WS510 last weekend and Comcast has just installed a new STB to allow for their HDTV broadcasts. I have to say that I'm impressed with the quality of the HDTV. For analog, I have been using Wide Zoom mode, since I like the picture to fill the TV. I used the "Flash Focus" feature to set the calibration, and the sales people where I bought it told me that would handle the adjustment. Do I still need to purchase a Calibration DVD? I was thinking about doing that, but not sure if it's worth it. I'm new to the whole HDTV thing and would greatly appreciate any input. Also, am thinking about buying a PS DVD player to replace the S-Video connection that I currently use. Will there be a major quality improvement? Sorry for all the questions, but I'm trying to learn as much as I can, as quickly as I can.

Read the FAQS lots of good info there, that will help you..
as far as the ps player, do some searches, but I think it depends on the player and the tv, I have 2 players hooked to my tv, and I use ps on 1 and interlased on the other, depends on how it looks to you.
just my .02
you are right as usual 57u, I ment FAQS, I fixed it in the post.
I think that even if you get a PS player and use it or not the picture quality will be a big difference with component cables over s-video.

Nice tv.
For sd viewing i would use the full mode, the wide zoom cuts of some of the top and bottom of the pic. you'll get use to the stretching.

I think you meant FAQs.
CN: Especially read the one "what you need to do to your new HDTV." If you want the best from your TV a proper setup is imperative.

Thanks for all the input. I sincerely appreicate it. I think I'm gonna pick up a calibration DVD and play around a bit. I can always reset it back with the flash focus.
Thanks again....
I have read through the FAQ and am learning all the "Lingo", so I'm finding it more helpful day by day. I guess this is quite a learning curve.
Thanks
Flash focus has to do with convergence (alignment of the CRTs). The setup DVD is intended more for setting up the colour, contrast, brightness, sharpness on your TV, as well as your home theatre setup.
A manual convergence is much better than a flash focus, but usually requires a trip into the service menu...
You can do as little or as much as you like, but a little work provides a big reward, typically. Remember, some people on these forums would be considered "fanatics".
Alternatively, you can always pay someone for a professional calibration.

Congrats on the TV cn31672, I purchased the same set about 3 months ago and love it. At the same time i got the Sony dav-fc7 dreamsystem to compliment it and absolutely love it. Took me a while to get everything just right but im still messing with it....
If anyone can burn me a calibrating dvd for cheap then message me.
Thanks

Someone can legally lend you one, but not make you one, and especially not "sell it". Even if it weren't illegal, it's unethical, especially for something that costs less than $20.

Amen to your post!!! As the owner of a video production company whose had material pirated before, I see far too much of this unethical and illegal practice. Just spend a few dollars and get a calibration DVD for yourself. It's more than worth the price and your TV will thank you for it.
