View Full Version : 16:9 vs 4:3 Sony

I am debating between the 16:9 30" HDTV Sony (KV-30HS510) and the 27" KV-27FS310.

I know these are really totally different TV's and you probably wonder why I would decide between these 2 since they are so very different in price and in features.

My problem is size. I only have much room in my living room for a TV. The width of the 30" (35.2) is just about as far as I can go wide (and still have room for my front speakers...) and then the depth issue is there, too. And both the 27" and the 30" are 4 to 6 inches less deep than the 32"+ 4:3...

Of course, I would love the HDTV and widescreen of the 16:9 set, but what about this issue of "burn in"? Does this model have that problem? We probably watch about 60% DVD to 40% 4:3 TV stuff, I would be getting the HD set for DVD and XBOX and not for over the air or cable HDTV programming itself (at least not yet), so would I get used to watching the 4:3 stuff streched?

Any suggestions?

If it's only DVD's and XBox, get the wide screen.

Most of the movies out today will be widescreen or have both formats available.

The XBox seems to have a lot of 16:9 titles but I don't own one.

I stretch a lot of my PS2 games and they look fine.

When you later hook up OTA, SAT, or Cable, go with what looks good.

You almost have to try and "Burn In" a CRT Direct view set.

Thanks for the response...

I assume by your burn in comment that it's not an issue with a CRT? Am I getting that right? Sounds like it's more a problem with Plasma and rear projection tvs, right?

Read the FAQs. There are posts on "burn in" and "4:3 vs widescreen", as well as other helpful posts.

You can Burn In a CRT Direct view. (I think DLP's are the only ones immune)

You just really have to go out of you way to do it. Personally, I've never seen it on anything but old 13" monitors we threw out at work. They sat in a factory office, on 24-7 with the same green text on black background.

Evidently, it's much more prevalent on CRT Rear Projection TV's, but then again, I've never seen it.

IMO, if you avoid 12 hour gaming sessions and turn off the TV when you are not using it, you'll be fine.
