My television worked fine for two weeks. Then it developed the buzz at start-up that others have described. After a few days it would not turn on. I purchased this from Crutchfied ($4,000). I am going to find out if they really honor their 30 day money back guarantee. I would like to get opinions as to whether I should try to get an identical replacement set or perhaps switch to a different brand.

The picture quality with HD broadcasts was superb. Quality for SD DirecTV broadcasts was only fair to poor. Some channels appeared muddy or out-of focus with an overall smudgy appearance. Even the best SD channels were worse than my old 50 inch Pioneer rear projection TV which never failed to turn on in ten years.

what was the manufacture date on the back of the TV?

that might tell you why the problem happened.

The same happened to mine, it's the light bulb, I guess most where shipped from a bad lot. Call sony, the replaced mine no questions asked and fed-ex'd it next day on a saturday, no charge. It takes about 5 minutes to replace the bulb

DITTO. If you get a buzz while the tV is trying to start, you have a bad bulb. Just got mine replaced overnight no charge and put it in this morning. Perfect!!!

Thanks Sony for taking such good care of your customers.

MFG month is January 2004.

I didn't look at the new one and I'm not going to open the TV back up to look. But I still have the old one and it is a Philips.

The sony part number is XL-2100U on the box of the new one.

I recently purchased my 60". Has it been confirmed through various means that it was just a case of bad bulbs or is the TV or its circuitry at fault. I have not taken delivery yet so I am a little concern. Would it be worth it to buy the extended warranty? I have many other Sony products that are very reliable so I was not too concern when I made the purchase.

I would definitly buy the extended warranty because most of them cover the bulb even if it lasts it's full life which is 2-5 years. usually the cost of the bulb would make the extended warranty pay itself off. You will love this TV, I have had mine for months with no problems at all. HD looks amazing and video games are also great.

I work for Best Buy. The other month we had just found out that the in home sevice we sell does NOT cover the bulbs on the LCD and DLP model. Also talking to our Sony rep they do NOT cover the bulb under there 1 year warranty. We have a display of the 42"g and it goes through bulbs right and left. Someone had asked either sony lcd or sammy dlp? if it were my 3grand to spend im going sammy dlp.

I guess people should buy their TV from CC then. Their extended warranty DOES cover the bulb. That is one of the selling points.

I think your Sony rep had better go back to his boss and ask again. Not only have they told me several times that the bulb is covered in the first year, they have already replaced mine at no charge. Overnight shipping even.

I decided to cancel my purchase the day before it was to be delivered. Too much money on something that may still have issues to be worked out. I can live with my 65XBR RP for now.

Sony covers the lamp for one year so I think that rep that you talked to is confused. Here is some info from Sony's knowledge base on the KF-60WE610:

IQ Knowledge Base Article

Symptom:
What is the lamp warranty of the LCD projection television.

Resolution:

The warranty for the lamp of the LCD projection television is one year.

NOTE: Replacement lamps are warranted for 90 days.

I have had zero problems with mine and I love it, but if you buy it from a store like CC, I got mine from Future Shop they both cover the replacment of lamps for the duration of the 5 years with their extended warranties.

I've been giving serious thought to the GWIII, but have been scared off by the "light bulb problem" and the "dead pixel problem."

I suspect the dead pixel problem is real, but I'm starting to suspect that the light bulb problem is not as wide-spread as the many posts to this and other HD forums would lead us to believe. I've noticed two things that make me suspicious:

* Many of the people reporting light bulb problems have only one or very few posts. As in this case, they don't get back and report their status. Sure it could be that they have better things to do, but is it possible that a few people with an agenda to spread FUD about Sony are posing as many people?

* Reports are that the big-box retailers, such as BB and CC, can't keep these units in stock and have stopped promoting them. What's up with that? It could be that they're having too many problems with the units, as some report; but I have to wonder why Sony can't fix what would appear to be a simple problem after so many months. Particularly when similar bulb problems aren't being reported by owners of LCD and DLP units from other manufacters. What makes the Sony so much more vulnerable in this area?

What do the rest of the "regulars" on this forum think about the Sony light bulb problem? Is it FUD or the real thing? If the real thing, why is it that Sony can't get it right after so many months?

I found the following links very informative on the newer RPTV techs.

http://www.clarityvisual.com/pdfs/technotes/Comparing_Rear_Projection.pdf

http://www.clarityvisual.com/pdfs/technotes/HighPressMercuryLamps.pdf

http://www.dlp.com/dlp_technology/images/dynamic/white_papers/153_Reliability_paper.pdf

For the last link.........refer to page 8 where it references picture reliability......yes it refers to lcd projectors.....but they use the same HTPS-LCD panels as the LCD-RPTV's (including SONY) do.

All I can tell you is that Sony admitted that they had some production bulb problems. They are fixed and they will replace any bad bulb for the first year.

Mine went bad the first month and with one very easy phone call, no questions asked, I had brand new bulb on my front door step the very next morning. The replacement bulb is working flawlessly.

The TV picture is one of the best I have ever seen. My local store is selling them at a rate of six per week, they can't keep them in stock. I would not have any hesitation telling everyone I know to buy a Sony LCD RPTV.
