Do I need a progressive scan DVD player with a projector?

Do I need to use a progressive scan DVD player when connecting it to a video projector? I thought all video projectors - being non-interlaced devices - are forced to deinterlace all incoming signals. Isn't that what a progressive scan DVD player does? Is it better to have the DVD player do it before it gets input to the video projector? I'm looking at getting the Infocus X1, which has the Faroudja™ DCDi™ processing hardware, which does an exceptional job of deinterlacing incoming signals. Wouldn't it be better to get a regular DVD player and let that hardware do the deinterlacing?

As you say, most projectors are progressive scan devices with native formats of 540P or 720P, etc.

They will work with either type of DVD player, but it'd probably be difficult to get a non-PS player new today anyway. Having the deinterlacing done by the DVD player in the digital domain may be better than in the projector, but it tends to vary on the quality/type of DVD player and the quality/type of display.

Get yourself a good DVD player - which will be PS capable today, and try it both ways (i and PS)...

57U, both my DVD player (Samsung) and my projector (Sharp XV-Z12000) upconvert signals. I can only run the DVD player in 720p or 1080i emulation/upconversion as it is running through my DVI and I cant scale/resize the picture up to fill my screen if I run it on 480.

One question is, is redundant work being done on my image? That is to say, are both the projector and dvd player "enhancing" the same image, twice? Or does one supercede the other? Also, my D-VHS player (JVC 30000) puts out a 1080i or 720p image .. that doesnt go through any kind of enhancing does it?

Its my feeling, and hope, that if a signal comes in as HD (1080i/720p) that its not 'enhanced' by my projector. Am I correct in thinking this way?

I run my DVD player in 480i mode and let my projector do the deinterlacing/scaling.

I preferred this over sending 480p to the pj.

Look for something like this in your specs:

Video Input Signals: NTSC, PAL, SECAM, 480p, 546p,720p,1035i, 1080i, 1080p 480p input will bypass de-interlacer, 720p will bypass de-interlacer/scaler)
