My wife and I been having a BLAST with our new Toshiba HDTV 57HX81, Toshiba Progressive Scan DVD, and 5.1 channel surround. I'm pretty much all set-up, but have a few items to "perfect" before I can say I am at 100% operational satisfaction. TWO MAJOR QUESTIONS FOR YOU GUYS. Here ya go:

1) When watching "widescreen" DVD's I still have black bars at the top and bottom of our HDTV (16:9 format). Is there a way to get rid of these, setting-up either the TV or DVD player a certain way?? When watching "fullscreen" DVD's I don't have these blackbars, I see the whole image, HOWEVER I do not get the true "cinematic" version with a "fullscreen" DVD......right?

2) I notice that the lower corners, both left and right, of the TV seem to bow downward below the frame of the screen. When a weather warning comes on it seems to be partially hidden when it scrolls from the right side, fully viewable in the center, and then partially hidden on the left side again. I've adjusted the convergence as per the manual, but it is still this way. Any suggestions there?

Thanks for your help Dudes!

THIS FORUM ROCKS!!! I'm glad I found it tonight. It's great to be a member and I'm looking forward to being part of the GANG.

Pete: Welcome to the forum. I don't know the answer to your second question, but it sounds like there is something wrong with your set that is beyond the control of the convergence, or perhaps any consumer oriented settings. I have not heard of exactly this problem before and because of the "bowing" it's not your typical "overscan" problem. Perhaps it's time to call service - I assume it's still under warranty.

I apologize if I was a little abrupt with my first answer. Many of us here are really tired of hearing about black bars.
