View Full Version : Newbie Question - HDTV Recording? Please help

I have a 32" 1080i HDTV , and Voom on the way tomorrow.
I'm still using a VCR. Is their something I can buy that would
record for me in 1080i? That'd be sweet. Even better if it
had a built in DVD burner as well. Am I dreaming?
Can anyone please give this newbie a clue?

1. There are some "external" HD recorders available. They record HD onto a hard disk drive (HDD). They require a firewire connection.
2. There is a D-VHS deck by JVC (a digital vcr). It also requires a firewire connection.
3. There are "integrated" STBs that allow for recording of Cable & Satellite. The Cable ones are out in a few areas, the satellite ones are due shortly.
4. HD-DVD is a year or more away and will be very expensive - currently there is one for about US$4k.

I recently purchased a Panasonic DVD-RAM recorder, model E50S (259.00 open box but at CC). I record Odyssey 5 from HDNet using the S-Video out of my JVC 6000 Dish reciever. Of course it has to be set to SD. Playback through component switching is amazing. It's near HD and much better than the source.
I've been skeptical that any upconversion by my tv would be noticable, but alas Frodo, I was wrong.
This is a great alternative while we wait for real HD recorders.
