I was expermenting with my RS VU90XR,What I did was cut off the rear vhf part or the antenna tho make it like a yagi.
The reason I did this was because I could not bring in nbc (low power from the ESB)Thinking it might make the gain a little better, I also at this time raised the antenna 5 more feet taller.
And guess what? Nbc comes in just fine and no loss in sig. or picture.
I dont know if it was the hight or the new sawed off job.
Maybe someone can explain this.
Remember this was an experment for the good of us all hopefully, so please go easy on me.
Now for the bad news, I lost my Channel 11.
Does anyone know what happened is ch. 11 a dig. VHF channel?
Here are some tidbits.
I live 10-13 miles from NYC
Antenna is on roof top.
I get Ch's 2,4,5,7,9,53
Any help would be great, you can even guess but let me know if you are. Thanks

Noting wrong with experimenting if you can afford it.
Let’s see? You cut off the back portion (VHF) and let the UHF section intact thinking you could increase the gain while raising the antenna 5 more feet. What you’ve done is to change the bandwidth characteristics of your VHF reception. Since you added no parasitic (yagi) elements to the UHF portion and raised the antenna height it should be obvious why you were able to pull in the station.
Depending on your mounting location, terrain, transmitter power-location, surrounding structures 5 feet can make a huge impact with digital signals.

OMG!
Wouldn't the first logical 'experiment' be... raise the antenna?
Cuttng off the the VHF portion cannot increase 'gain' for UHF.
Pehaps 'ask first, cut later' would be more advantageous.
Have fun!
(H-m-m-m... maybe if I remove the front wheels on my car, I can go faster because there'll be less friction?)

Rat stop being a smart ass, The antenna was going to be trashed anyway. I'm changing it out for a fly swatter,I'm waiting for delivery.

Hey gunn55...
I was not being a smart ass. Just pointing out that you perhaps you were a dumb ass! (You never stated that were trashing the VU90!)
Just so you know... you still may have trouble with Channel 11 since it's VHF (assuming that the 'fly swatter' you mention is the CM4228). Or... you could be lucky depending on the x-mitter's power.
What have I done lately?
What's that supposed to mean?
What I haven't done lately is cut my 4228 in half to make two antennas!

Rat, No hard fealings, I ordered a DB4 From Antennas Direct, I know about Ch.11 it is touch and go but in theory it is close enough to the uhf band so I'm going to give it a try.
Some people in my area can get it with the same antenna and some can't as they say location, location, location.
I will keep you posted,Thanks for your reply.
NEVER FORGET :usa1:
