Hi all!!! Got my 50HDX82 coming the first week of September (Yippie!!!) and trying to collect everything else I'll be needing. Was looking for a progressive DVD to go w/the set and a budy of mine (who was hard up for cash) sold me his Toshiba SD-5109 (which I think is progressive???) for $50. I figure at the very least I could throw it on the tv in my bedroom, but my real question is, what the heck is this thing??? Can't find it on the Toshiba website??? Will this thing be sufficient for my new set or is this thing just a "piece" barely worthy of throwing on the rarely used tv in my bedroom??? Thanks!!! - Rob
p.s. if it is a "piece", any recommendations for a mid-level well priced progressive player??

Before you worry try it first... the picture more than likely will be good.
Toshiba make excellent DVD players. Here are a couple of links to the player I found on Yahoo. If you only paid $50 and it works, looks like you got a great deal.
Toshiba DVD1 (http://www.newsearching.com/dvd_player5/dvd_player5.html) Go to this URL and click on the player. I could not get the link to work from the player directly.
Toshiba 2 (http://www.epinions.com/elec_Home_Theater-DVD_Toshiba_SD-Toshiba_SD-5109) Click on the reviews for glowing reports of this high priced unit.

So I take it this is an "older" model.......does that mean it will be lacking some of the technology as compared to like the SD-4800? If something like the 4800 has more features now and has superior pic quality I would much rather pick that up since their only around $200. Oh yeah......my friend neglected to tell me that the remote was broken (actually his dog chewed it) for the 5109......what are the odds of me finding a replacement for that??? - Rob
Thanks for the help!!!
1. If the unit works properly, it will have a great picture and it's very doubtful the new ones would be noticeably better.
2. You could contact a Toshiba dealer and see if he could get you a remote. You could also try e-mailing Toshiba to see if they'll sell it to you directly. I think the odds are good.
3. Many of today's remotes for other equipment (TVs, Receivers, etc) already contain the programming for DVD players. If you have another remote, you should see if it works for this DVD player. (It may not have some of the features, like Zoom, etc. but the basic DVD functions should be there).
4. For example, my Yamaha Receiver's Remote has all of the programming built in for the many different pieces of equipment that I have. It's also a learning remote, so I have taught it some of the more esoteric features also.
5. So, you've changed your memberID?

I think I will try it out for awhile based on your adivce.....and being that I'm a newb its not like I know what to look for yet anyways. I was going to try calling Toshiba about a remote but didn't know if this model was so old that they wouldn't have any in stock.....and to program a different remote I thought that I might need the original.....so in either case looks like I'll be fine there. One last question.....it seems that the problem of the "chroma bug" is almost like common knowledge to everyone here.....but just getting into this stuff I have no idea what exactly this "bug" is? Is this really a problem for these things or just more of a neusance to those knowing what to look for? Thanks again!!! - Rob
p.s. yep......I wanted to just change the email address for my first ID but couldn't find the link to do so.....so I just made a new one w/the correct email address! (man.....didn't know I was being watched so closely!?!?!?:D )

Don't worry about the Chroma Bug! As soon as you find out what it is, you will look for it, maybe see it and then it will drive you crazy!
I warned you!:)

Thanks Ratman......but be forwarned that I'll be back asking if there is some "glitch" in my DVD viewing :) .......then you can bombard me with all the nitty gritty on this little bug. Thanks guys!!! - Rob
(p.s. hey Ratman - on a side note, now that I find myself coming back here daily to check new posts, I must say that I appreciate and rather enjoy your straightforward, and sometimes harsh, replies. I usually agree with your outlook on most of this stuff. Thanks to all for taking the time to help those of us with little to offer in return.....we are indebted to you!)

Sorry if I come off as "harsh", but it's really not intentional! I read a lot of posts on this and other forums. After a while, you find that most people ask a simple question and many repondants start to get deep into the technicalities about HDTV, digital reception, DVD players, etc.
IMO, I feel that for the most part, a of this lot causes either undo panic or perhaps steers an individual to get cold feet or spend extra $$ on 'things' that a novice would never hear/see/notice!
I just try to keep things in perspective and provide helpful info to those that want the same thing as I do... quality sound and picture at an affordable price!
It's very easy to be diverted. But for most questions a simple, direct, and logical attitude can be the best information.
Of course, that's just my opinion! Others will surely differ. I try my best to help others based on my experiences.
BTW... I have a Toshiba SD3750 DVD player which supposedly has the "chroma bug". Well, maybe I'm blind or ignorant, but I have never seen it 'in person'. Ever since I heard about this danged thing, I've been looking! So, yeah maybe there is a bug, but I have never seen it! So, maybe it's the 'tree falling in the forest' thing!
