I was a little board this afternoon so I went to the CC to see what kind of entertainment the sales guys would provide.
They did not let me down.
We were talking about FOX only being ED (480p) and he told me that I did not live closed enough to the tower to get the full HD from FOX.
Did you know that the closer you lived to a tower, the higher HD you get? For example, FOX will provide me with a 1080i signal if I lived close enough. A little farther back the signal will drop to 720p. If I live way far away I will only get the 480p.

That sales rep needs to be given an Oscar for Comedy Performance of the Year and it's only March. Good one! :)
Friday I was in Best Buys, just seeing if they will EVER get any kind of decent WIDEscreen music dvds in stock........of course not..........then wander over to the big screen department.
I stood next to one of the BB sales gerbils who appeared to be salivating and he was patting his wallet in his back pocket as he answered a prospective sucker.......er.......customer interested in buying and HD tv.
I literally had to walk away to restrain myself from blasting the gerbil and advising the customer to shop elsewhere. The convo went something like this (before I had to walk away shaking my head):
Customer: "So, this an HD set, then how do I get HD shows?"
BBGerbil: "Oh yes sir! This is an HD ready set. Do you have cable?"
Customer: "Why, yes, I do."
BBGerbil, (sensing the kill): "Good, then all you have to do is get an HD box and it's only, like $ 5.00 more a month for all the HD shows."
Customer, (now with heart thumping, thinking of good reasons to convince spouse (standing beside him) that they must not leave the store without the set): "Oh great, that's not much. So, I just get the box and I'm set, right?"
BBGerbil: "Yep, that's it!"
Customer: "So, are all the channels I'll be getting, (once I fork over the price you've got marked on the tag and call the cable guy) ALL be in HD?"
.........a bit of silence, then real BS begins...........
BBGerbil: "Why YES, ALL you see will be in HD - sports, like ESPN (I about gagged on that one), all your local channels, everything will be in HD. I mean, why would they make sets like this and the cable box for HD?"
...........at this point I tried to see what the gerbil's nametag said, but he wasn't wearing one, gave him a glare, shook my head in pity for the poor customer, and walked away............I wondered to myself if the gerbil even had an HDTV at home to even know what the hell he was talking about............
obviously NOT............

according to my local CC rep, true HD can be broadcasted in both 16:9 and 4:3 .... wow, if only i knew that before ....
and according to the local BB rep, DIRECTV offers "everything" in HD .... wow, wouldnt that be something .....
i just wonder what the so called "managers" are thinking when they hire these idiots (no offense to those here that work at BB or CC) ........
It'd be nice to hear one of them say " I'm not sure, let me check" or "I dont know" .... however, being morons and egotistical Gerbils (thanks Tom) you'll rarely get anything honest out of those dingleberries. If only they would check out a forum like this once in a while to get their heads straight...... thank god for the sanity that is HDTVoice!!!!

hey some of us CC employees do come here and do know something about the products we sell to consumers. But i do agree that alot of them do not know a lot about the products they sell. I will even send customers who arent ready to buy but are ready to do some homework here if they still need conformation on what i have told them. So please dont bash us all. Thanks.

By no means do I intend to bash you all. I appreciate it when I find a well informed sales rep. I bought my TV from CC because the salesmen knew their stuff.
You have to admit though, it can be very entertaining to listen to some of the BS they come up with.
The only thing funner is to watch people launch boats in the summer time. Some of you will know what I am talking about.

Oh yes! Especially early in the season on the first launch and they get the 'rude' reminder about the drain plug. Or launching with the tie-downs still on.
I've actually seen a row of guys in lawn chairs with score cards, it was hilarious.
My son and I can launch our wakeboard boat in seconds, just long enough to shift the truck from reverse to forward :). Of course we prep the boat in the "PREP" lane before pulling into the launch lane. Novel concept eh?
You've hit upon one of my other loves. Home Theater, Boats, Computers and Cars. :D
Sorry, a little off subject

I have to admit I have learned quite a bit from this site, but if I worked at CC or BB I would make a point to learn as much as I could about all aspects of Home Theater. Too bad that only a select few out there give a crap about their product knowledge.

I don't know how the folks at those stores are trained. You have to admit that those of us at HDTVoice are here because we love this stuff :). Its not a job.
I do agree if I worked in HT sales I would want to know all I could.
I've run into the same thing with car salesmen, some know their stuff others don't.
Not flaming young folks but a lot of the sales types I see at BB are very young and if persuing a career in sales are just starting to learn their trade. A lot of us here are very 'seasoned' :) and I'm constantly in the learn mode.
You have to grow old, you don't have to grow up :)

And I believe there lies the difference between that one salesman who loves his job and makes a hobby of it...and those dozens, if not hundreds who are there to punch the time card in/out, and that's about it.

Doom.........take no offense - actually, here in our Ky. town, the CC folks have always seemed to be more knowledgeable in the HD/big screen hi price items...........and I've complimented them here on this site before. Had it not been for the great help of their customer service rep. I might still be waiting on my old Hitachi to be fixed..........
But it is annoying to hear misinformation being spit out - can you imagine if that customer I mentioned in my story actually buys that HD set, takes it home, gets the HD box upgrade from his cable co., and then finds out not ALL programming is HD? I believe the BB gerbil's butt cheeks will become quite tight when said customer returns to the store to bring that to his attention!

I'm very lucky. For fun, I own my own Malibu which I think is one of the best ski boats made IMO. But, professionally I drive both Nautique and Hydrodyne twin rig w/400 HP in ski shows all summer long. It's very cool.
HD is one of my fun hobbies along with computers.
I sell computers to car dealerships for a living, so I get to play with computer stuff at work too.

Worked me a deal on speakers.

Certainly not all are this way, but I was just in CC on Saturday night and met one of these guys. The bad thing was he was a sales manager! That scares me. I asked the same question on this board about how non HD channel are gong to look on the hdtv and he responded great. He even tried to convice me the picture of an analog game they had on (think U Conn) was a great looking picture. He told me we needed to stand back about 40 foot to get the right look of it. It still looked like crap, I couldn't even read the name on the back of jerseys. That alone sent me straight over to Ultimate - much more informed saleperson (got lucky). I still cannot get over the fact of buying a very expensive tv and having to watch crappy looking shows still.
Where have most people bought their tv's? I'd like to go to a more high end shop to talk to someone? Thanks for your input.

because unlike where you live, CC here had some pretty knowledgeable sales gerbils............it was BB that had the ones with no clue.
:boo2:
I really believe your best bets are established family-owned electronics dealers - the 'mom & pop' type stores - there are some fine ones out there and in most cases if you find a set elsewhere that is a brand they have, they willl try to get your biz by matching the big chain store's prices.........
On the other hand, I believe it is up to the CONSUMER to educate himself - I mean, crap, if I'm gonna shell out several grand on something, I sure want to know what I'm looking for and do the research beforehand - as we've all noted, relying on some snapperhead with a nametag pinned on his shirt to guide you is risky business...........
