Is this a good deal on a DVHS recorder

I'm sorry to be so vague, but I didn't think this through til I got back home...

Just went to BB and wandered over to the D-VHS machines to see what they have. I was not ready to buy one yet, because I'm waiting for Comcast to activate the firewire port on my stb. As a long time TiVo owner, it's very frustrating not being able to time shift HD. My thinking is that D-VHS is far better than nothing til somebody comes out with a HD PVR for my cable system. And it will remain useful for archiving.

Well, they had two open box machines there for under $250. We just spent about that much on a photo printer for my wife, so I didn't really entertain the thought of getting one of the tape machines.

Now that I'm home though, I'm wondering if I should go back tomorrow and get one. Unfortunately, I don't have a model number.

Any thoughts?

I've been looking long and hard at the JVC DVHS machines and the best I can fing is 350.00 on an open box but at sears, without remote or any acc's. My big hiold up is that my tv has only component, no firewire, and I can do just as well with a DVD-R at this point in time. Sounds like an awfully good deal to me, if you have firewire inputs on your tv.

Thanks for the info. My tv doesn't have firewire either, and I didn't realize the Mits only has forewire out. Dang! Is JVC the only mfr with component out? Boy, I'd probably jump on that JVC if it were here.

You still have to have firewire to be able to record in HD. The components are just for progressive scan.

Firewire is required as an "input" for any stand-alone HD recording device like the D-VHS recorder.

The component video is an "output" from the recording device and is required to send HD (not simply progressive scan) to your TV.

The Mitsubishi deck is "special" because it'll only work with a Mits TV (or perhaps a select few firewire-equipped TVs), so let's not confuse the issue with that deck.

The JVC D-VHS deck is therefore the only D-VHS deck useable by most people, but you still need to have a "source" of HD signals that has a firewire output.

Does it stand that if you have firewire out of your stb and into the Mitsubishi recorder, you could output this to a firewire equipped tv.

Would this them yield an unconverted HD recording?
