The ABC feed in LA for SD over the HD channel is wider than the normal 4:3 screen. This is very apparent when flipping between NBC, CBS, and ABC when they all have SD on. The black bars get very narrow for ABC, and it appears they are stretching the SD material to almost 16:9.

Is this just the local LA feed, of does ABC do this nation wide?

This is not the case for Detroit or Seattle. The upconverted programmes are 4:3.

We have one station - City-TV HD that does an aspect closer to 13:9. PBS Spokane does upconvert all their SD to 16:9 in a mode very similar to some HDTV stretch modes. Sometimes this looks good, other times not.
