does hooking up components through an audio receiver degrade the pic quality of lets say a stb or dvd player...dvd to receiver to tv or stb to receiver to tv ?????

Granted, my av receiver is low end - JVC RX7030V, but I notice slight degradation in the output. I use component switching for my DVD player and Dish reciever then output to my TC 1080i component inuts. THe HD channels are somewhat less crisp, but I can't see a difference with the DVD.
I am running on the assumption that my TV will attempt to upconvert the DVD's 480p output to 1080i. I'm thinking of switching back to direct inputs and forgo the luxury of the whole one-touch scenario.
I would not worry with any SD signals. The only concern is with HD and as long as your receiver has more than 37MHz bandwidth on the conponent video, you should be fine. I know lots of people who have noticed no difference.
I have noticed a difference even on high end receivers. I would do as 57U sugested and run your HD sat or cable box straight to your tv.

Reply from Mech: What did 57U say? It would be fine if your reciever has at least 37 MHz component switching.
I believe most have at least that. My Onkyo has 50 MHz.
I was worried about this too but, I can't notice any difference really.

I agree, you should run your HD directly to the TV if possible. I run my DVD and X-box through the receiver because I only have one available component input. If it is going to make any difference, it will be less on those devices than on HD.
