I have a 17inch LCD Gateway Monitor/TV but the strange thing is when I press the Volume down button on my reciever's remote the monitor turns off.

Is this normal for 2 companies to use the same IR codes on 2 different products?

I find it a bit annoying, at first I was happy that I had a remote for my computer monitor but now it is a bit of a pain. Is there any way to work around it without having to put a piece of tape or something over the IR reciever on the monitor?

Thanks,
MAX

The remote for one piece of equipment should not affect another. I suspect something wrong with the receiver's remote, but stranger things have happened.

I recall this happening before, but I believe in all instances, the remote was faulty.

Is it possible for you to borrow another similar (HK) remote from the store to see?

This happens every once in a while. I review a lot of equipment and I have had two instances in which two components responded (differently) to the same remote code.

Does it work the other way? Can the remote power on/off for the monitor adjust the volume on the receiver?

no the monitor remote cannot turn the volume down on my reciever. I just tried.

But both the regular remote and the zone 2 remote for my HK reciever can turn off the monitor by pressing volume down. this is really weird. and what's worse is the IR coverage seems to be better for turning off the monitor than turning down the reciever.
I dont even have to point it anywhere near the monitor and it turns off.

Thanks Kal, If it doesn't work "the other way" then the HK remote is "dirty" sending out an improper signal.

That's possible. Another possibility is that the monitor receiver is over-sensitive.

If the remote was "dirty" then how come both of my remotes for the reciever do the same thing to the monitor?

I think it may be that the monitor is a little bit over sensative.

well now I guarantee that my monitors IR receiver is way to sensative!

On my old reciever "HK 7200" the Volume minus button use to turn on and off the monitor which was very annoying, So I figured when I got my new receiver that problem would be gone. NOPE! now when I press DVD on the Yamaha the monitor goes on and off. Still very annoying! So now I have to resort to putting in piece of electrical tape over the IR recevier on the monitor which is ugly and shouldn't be needed.
Has anyone else ever had a problem like this? If so what did you do?

Sounds like that monitor accepts too wide a frequency range. Perhaps if you can take the unit apart, you could put a piece of tape over the sensor itself, covering perhaps 90% of the sensor, to allow the proper remote to work and the other remotes not to?

I have a similar problem with a Harmon Kardon receiver. I have the HK AVR-230. I have a Samsung TS-160 HD satellite receiver, and every time I enter in a channel number, and hit the number "4", it turns off my Harmon Kardon receiver. Figure that!
