View Full Version : The Final Four Thread
Discuss the terrible final four broadcast here...
As for me the pic quality is terrible, very grainy, and not crisp.
The cameras of the baskets are not HD. And many people think that some of The cameras are only 16:9 SD camera's not HD
The feed is not coming in Dolby Digital for me so I can't hear the announcers
My station multicasts, so I'm sure there's loss in available bandwidth there also.
If anyone else is experiencing this please post your comments....
 , heh

They are using three types of cameras. The main cameras are HD, the handheld on the floor are 16:9 SD and the one over the top of the basket is 4:3 SD.
The HD camera pictures are looking great.
i thought it looks like crap, they only have 3 hd cameras? did CBS file for chapter 11 or something? geez they suck...

why all the negativity? Oak.st. vs GT was a great game and in HD...come on lets just sit back relax and enjoy!!
LoL
It's not ruining my life, but to say this is an HD game is a big over statement. I just think it's pretty lame when people spend a lot of money on equipment and broadcasters can't hold up and deliver a major event in good HD quality. Are you watching the post game report, hmm what are those funny blue bars, c'mon.

I agree it could have been better. The last game I watched (Lakers vs Kings) was 10x better. But ESPN has the "clear" advantage...CBS should have stepped up. Oh Well...
BTW...UCONN!

5.1 sound was pretty good. Not a lot of crowd sounds coming from the rear, but that might've been intended. With 5.1 sound I love to hear the buzzers, PA announcements, etc (off screen stuff). Some of the crowd chants (sounds like "who...who") make me think the neighbors mammoth dog is barking again outside.

...Some of the crowd chants (sounds like "who...who") make me ....
Thats Luke as the the big man from Australia for GA Tech. For those who did not like the show, try watching in SD on a regular tv. I watched the first half at home with perfect color and clarity. I watched the 2nd half at a neigbors in bad color SD.... :mecry:
Even though I think the Final Four is a much bigger event, I think the reason there might have been only 2 HD cameras was because they needed the other equipment to set up for The Masters. I think CBS knew it was going to suck. I don't even remember them mentioning it was being simulcast in HD, probably not to give it any attention because it was a terrible broadcast. What a shame...
For the second consecutive year, the standard analog and HDTV productions of the 2004 Masters Tournament will be unified and will provide 18-hole coverage in HDTV's highest definition format.
In the largest HDTV production, CBS Sports will utilize 42 high definition cameras and 10 hand-held 16x9 standard definition cameras. The unified productions will be produced in HDTV's highest definition format, 1080i, and downconverted for the CBS Television Network's analog broadcast. This production technique also produces a better quality analog picture. Whether watching in widescreen HD or traditional 4x3 analog, viewers hear the same golf announcers and see the same camera angles, replays and graphics.
42 HD cameras for the masters :wow: :wow:
I guess that's why there where only 2 left to cover the Final Four

picture was great and DD5.1 was desent, sounded like whomever was mixing it had the gain turned up too much.... alot of low end thuds from bad EQ...... however, the results of the second was less then stellar....go GT
I heard this rumbling near the end of the game...I guess it was the Cameron losers getting off the wagon...great game!! go Uconn!!!

Women had another solid game tonight. On ESPNHD, this game was flawless in HD....Men and Women going for it all!!!!
Wow I can't beleive the different opinions about this topic! I thought the broadcast looked pretty good and the DD 5.1 was pretty decent also. I have Cox Comm in So Cal and everything was just fine by me. I will say that people need to realize that DD 5.1 isn't going to be that great for these types of broadcasts. What do you want, the sound of the ball swishing in the net behind you? That wont happen in a live broadcast.

Ok, I dont work in the industry, but I would think it wouldnt be all that hard to have 10 of those cameras that are going to be used for the Master at the Final 4 then ship them to the masters. I mean seriously. Is it really all that hard to get everything set up for the Masters except the cameras then just plug them in later? I am not complaining, just being critical

Yes.....UCONN.....Time to go flip some cars.
I'm sorry Duke fans. Keep thinking your the tops. It keeps Connecticut as the under dog despite the women domination and comparable men performance. I just think Calhoun did the best coaching of his career during the tournament. He knew the Duke game was all about the horrible officiating and out coached Kerzewisky.
Duke versus UCONN football in fall. Cant wait.
yea!! Rode Uconn pick in my pool all the way to easy money!! Screw ACC, GO BIG EAST!!!

What was the thread topic??? Oh yeah, the QUALITY of the Final Four broadcast...the Final game was fine. On my OTA, the PQ seemed kind of grainy at times as they switched back and forth between cameras. IMHO, I still think CBS does the best HDTV work, among the major networks. I just got ESPN HD, so I can't compare yet.
The clicking sound at Half Time?? The rout was on and it was the sound of millions of viewers switching over to NBC and AVERAGE JOE!!

after watching the mens game last night on cbs and then the women on espn, i could definately say that the espn's hd broadcasts were better for the final four. starting with the pregame all the way through when sportscenter came on, the only sd shots i saw were the live shots from uconn's arena and clips from non-hd games. even all of the intros and interviews were hd. then the mens game last night, i thought it was very poor work for cbs. they are my favorite network for hd because of how much content they have in hd and the picture quality of it. but i'm just glad i didn't have anyone over to watch the game with me because i was mad the entire time seeing all of the 16x9 sd cameras and 4x3 shots. the only part of the broadcast that was really in hd was the on the court action and not even all of it was at that.(plus the chevy trucks comercial) the masters better make up for it because the mens final four games really disappointed me. as much as i used to agree with all of the people who love to knock espn's hd broadcasts, i'm starting to like it a lot better after watching that mens game on cbs. i even think that every espn hd broadcast i see is produced better than the one before it. but i always like to say that bad hd is still better than stretched analog tv.

I had watched ESPN before CBS and it was no comparison. More convincing tonight watching the Women Huskies win. Like I said before it was "clear" ESPNHD reigns. The game looked as good as Uconn played. I watch all sorts of HD programming. Most is great but some areas still have some room for improvement. Still all steps are forward steps. HD there is no going back! ;)

Unfortunately I was on the road so I didnt see the games in HD. I would have if the Tivo HD unit arrived. But it did not so I had to watch the womens game last night 2 hours later using Tivo.
The good news is that UConn is the dominant basketball program in the world. There can be numerous arguments but 2 titles in the same here! 7 in the past nine! Teams only wish they can have one. How bout that Duke? 3 versus 7. hmmm...... Go UCONN!

To all you CT fans Congrats to a well deserved win. I would have preferred my Jackets to be the champs :( But I'll have to wait till next year :D
Maybe they will have more cameras....
