I have the 60 inch Sony and love it, wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. The Hitachi is nice as well so it's a hard decision. But as you can see in my case I went with the Sony after seeing both TV's because I thaught the PQ was a little bit better. But that could have been the way the sets were set up in the store.

That being said I dont think you can go wrong with either.

I agree with Max that you can't make a bad choice with the sets listed.

I'd print out their feature list and check which ones are important to you, then go with the most checks. :)

I believe the XBR950's come in 50", 60", and 70" flavors.

BTW, I didn't check if they all have them, but you need to decide if a built in tuner is worth the extra dough.

Ismd69,

The Sony xbr950 series is only available in 60 & 70". I have the 60", and it is a very nice tv.

I believe the same model year has the same "light engine". Last years was 768P, this years is 788P. Might be wrong, but might be right, I may be crazy, la la la.

Well, I might be able to help you a little because I have bought all three of those sets.

The first time around I bought the 50" Hitachi. Then returned it only because I wanted to move to the 60". However they were out of the Hitachi 60", so I bought the Sony 60". Then my sister wanted to buy one, so we went to the store and the Panasonic 50” was on sale, so we bought it.

I think all three are fantastic. The Hitachi has the fewest HD inputs, which was a drawback. The Sony has the ugliest and most overpriced stand, but you can buy a different stand, which I did. The Panasonic has the most inputs and can also hook up as a computer monitor. It is the least expensive and comes with a DVI cable in the box. Also, has the best looking stand.

I don't thing the XBR is worth the extra cash. The unit is something like $1,500 more, but does come with the HD tuner if that is important. It was not to me. The stand on the XBR is also like $1,000 list price. Again, way overpriced.

I disagree that the stand for the 60" Sony's is ugly. I agree it is over priced, but how often are you going to buy such a tv. Note, if you are going for the xbr 60" get the stand for the 60"we which is less than the xbr stand. The xbr stand is one size for both the 60 & 70" models. As for the difference between the 60" xbr, and the 60"we tv's, I believe the 2 most significant differences are;
-the xbr has a 120w lamp versus the we which is 100w. This gives the xbr the extra push for clarity & brightness.
-the xbr has a much nicer aesthetic appearance than the we.

I also agree that the Sony Stand is nice, and I personally hated the Panasonic Stand. It just simply looks to small under the Panny TV, I dont like how the TV hangs over the sides of the stand so much.

I also agree the XBR looks nicer from outer asthetics but I didn't think it performed much better to justify the price difference. The WE is already extremely bright and I dont know if you would really want it any brighter. The XBR is also a deeper TV and heavier so I dont think the WE stand would work for it. There is also a clip on the back of the Sony stands that sort of bolts the TV to the stand and I think they are different clips on each of the TV's.

Hope this helps a bit,

Maybe it was the XBR800's that had a 50" ? Oops.

Max, you may be right that the we is bright enough, but I liked the look of the xbr enough to spend the extra $.
As for the stand, although the weight of the xbr is heavier, it is not as wide as the we by approx. 2". I bought and use the SU-GW1 stand which is the we stand, and have no problems. The shelves actually have more height space, and is cdn $500 less than the xbr SU-GW3 stand.

My advice is whatever you do go with the SONY. I don't think the XBR is worth the extra money, but it does have a bit better picture. The comment about extra inputs is something you need to consider, I would never by a tv that does not have enough. You need atleast two component inputs and a DVI. 3 Components would be ideal.

Go with the SONY so you won't be like my neighbor and feel bitter everytime you look at someone else's SONY...... He says that almost everytime he and his wife come over.

Didn't mean to offend anyone by calling your baby ugly. It was all just my opinion. What I thought was cool about the Panasonic stand was that it was smaller than the TV, so the TV sat up high and looked like a flat screen on a pedestal rather than an RPTV. BTW, my wife hated the panny stand. It is all in the eye of the beholder.
