I don't know if this has already been posted here, but i came across this in my search for an HDTV receiver:

I recently discovered a company that's manufacturing a box called MOXI (www.moxi.com). the box supposedly is meant to replace your satellite receiver (or cable box), your dvd/cd player, WebTV unit and your Tivo box and combines them all into ONE unit.

the cool thing is that it will be able to decode AND record HDTV (via an internal tuner and an internal hard disk) and allow ANY TV in your house to access the contents of this one box via a 802.11, firewire, or an ethernet solution! In other words, one can have "satellite" in every room via just one receiver.

I could be wrong on this, but I've also heard is that this will be release ONLY to DSS providers and cable providers since the cost is expected to be north of $1000. as such, the plan is to have the consumers lease this box from the satellite or cable provider or purchase it from them for a much lower price of approx. $300 - $400.

The product got the "Best of Show" at this year's CES.

Any one else heard of this or anything equivalent? I've also heard that tivo showed it's HDTV box at this years CES as well.

Moxi was purchased by another company who will not launch until late 03.

First HDTV PVRs will most likely come from JVC and Dish TV according to the rumors at avsforum.com around Q1 03.

on motorola's website they list a hdtv, pvr, cable box unit called the dct5200 i believe. No idea on release date. Hopefully cox cable comes out with them in my area soon. That would be great. i would gladly pay 10 -15 bucks a month to rent that.

Scientific Atlanta are also releasing their SA8000 (already out in testing?) and SA8000HD (soon). These units will have scaling, two tuners for watching one channel, recording another (not recording two) and POP modes. Also firewire and optional DVI.

This site (http://www.twckc.com/services/hdtv/compare.asp) give some idea of the specs, but it does not list the PVR capabilities.

I've heard these units are still quite "buggy", so don't be the first on the block to get one. You'll probably have to get it through your cable company anyway, so they'll have done the testing. Rogers Cable in Toronto, do not plan to release either unit in the immediate future...

Why no build a HDTV computer? Get a My HD card (http://www.digitalconnection.com/Products/Video/myhd_sale.asp) for $299 and two 120 gig hard drives. If you get a firewire PCI card then you can transfer HDTV recordings over to a D-VHS. The only problem is recording from satellite.

Peder, thanks for the link. This unit can't record from Cable either. That eliminates 85% of households. The remaining 10-15% can give it a try (if they can get a signal) but this technology is another order of magnitude more difficult than the HDTV stuff being discussed most of the time in this forum. Also, there is no "easy" access to IPG-type information. I've also heard this unit is pretty buggy.

If you're a technophile and computerphile, sure, but if you're Joe Average consumer, wait a few months for the consumer HD recorder/PVR/DVRs to be available.
