I want ot go in and tone down the red on my tv. It's overpowering the other colors and a bit annoying.
How do I get into the service menu to do so? Please make it simple as I'm a newbie to the TV- delivered today (and I do computer networking for a living!)
Tim
If you havent figured it out already here is how to get into the service menu.
MAKE SURE YOU PRESS NO BUTTONS OTHER THAN THE ONES I MENTION. YOU WILL RUIN YOUR RPTV.
First you will want to write down all the settings for this menu. JUST IN CASE YOU MESS UP OR DROP THE REMOTE. Remember that the cancel button is your friend. use it just in case you mess up.
READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS AT LEAST TWICE, TO MAKE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND, BEFORE YOU START.
1) Turn contrast down to about 35% (63 clicks total, 35% is 22 clicks)
2) Select the Low color temperature
3) Be warned that you are taking risks by entering the service menus! Don't change what you don't understand, don't press buttons on the remote when you don't know what they do.
4) Press Menu-0157 to enter the service menu.
5) Press Video repeatedly to view all the parameters and WRITE down your original values!
6) Change 56. VM to 0 (up and down on the thumbpad changes values)
7) Change 64. R-YR to 12
8) Change 65. R-YB to 14
9) Change 66. G-YR to 8
10) Change 67. G-YB to 6
11) Press ENTER to save your changes after every change (text will turn red for a second)
12) Press MENU or HOME to leave service mode
13) Set sharpness about 4-5 clicks below center.
14) Use Avia or Sound & Vision DVD with blue filter to set user controls for brigthtness, color, and tint.
Steps 4-13 should be done for each scan rate (480i, 480p, and 1080i). You can temporarily set up your DVD player via S-Video to make those adjustments and copy the user settings from step 14 over to your antenna or other s-video source inputs. They would also be a good start for the HD input, but you may well have to use your own judgement to tweak HD if you don't have a test pattern generator.
That doesn't get into geometry/convergence but should be a start.
You can later learn to fine tune the color decoder parameters using Avia's red and green color bars patterns. You may also want to learn to do convergence in the service mode and use the ability of that mode to view one color at a time to really hammer down color/tint and color decoding.
But, those 14 steps should get you in good shape picture-wise.
This will save you about $500 in calibration costs. I too am a network admin. Just thought we should stick together.:D

I'll let you know when I actually sit and make the changes. I got into a household painting project last night that I'll finish tonight after work.

Do these instructions apply to most Mits models? I just bought a 65" Platinum Plus (sorry, don't remember the model # offhand) and take delivery of it tomorrow. One of the first things I want to do is correct the red push. Thanks!

I can only comment on my own expereince, bu on my model, thee changes make things look much better. Blade 2 hasa crazy amount of red in it- the menus are red black and white, and the style of the movie has lots of red lighting that before these changes just looked wrong :) the red was bleeding all over (pardon the pun!) and things were awful looking. WHith these changes, things look much better and natural.

So is there anything out there that explains what each item in the service menu means? Like, what is VM? Are those adjustments for R-YR, etc just for component inputs? Is there some setting that is just an on-off switch for red push? I'm one of those anal people that likes to know what everything means so would like to know what everything in the service menu means....

Oh, and by the way, those codes above DID work for my WS65869. Thanks a ton!

AFter having some taime to play and watch various movies, the settings are just about perfect :)
LOTR is amazing- the sequences in the mines are rich and full of detail. My fater-in law was raving about being able to see the orcs in some of the backgrounds that could not be seen before. Not to mention the deatil that comes from the larger screen. the Black level is perfect- blacks in movies or black frames exactly match any black framing that may occur in a widescreen frame (2.35:1)
Pixar movies are incredible- Monsters Inc. is somewhat mind blowing- the hair on Sulley :)
I can't wait for SW:Ep2 on DVD.

Yeah is it just me or does Monster's Inc. almost look pretty dang close to HD quality. I have the 55859 and did the red push on it and reset it up and oh my what a difference. If Monster's Inc. looks that good just on DVD I can't wait to see it in actual HD.:)

I did those configurations on my 65869 and i thought it made the picture look worse. Monsters inc looked really good to start and when i made those corrections the colors just seemed off. I did however adjust the video options to the specs above and will probably keep them there. The service menu adjustments didn't seem to work well for my tv. Thanks for the info though, it was worth a try.

I performed the adjustment last week on my ws-55859 unit. I readjusted the tv with sound & vision tune up dvd and the picture looked somewhat better at first. Then, last night I went through the S&V calibration again & I found some video settings that i had previously made not to be quite right, mainly color. Anyway after performing the adjustments the picture is much better, no red skin tones. The picture wasn't bad before by any means, but I am much happier with it now.
