FAQ - What's better 720P, 1080i

This subject is "moot" to most TV owners since all consumer CRT-based HDTVs cannot natively display 720P, converting incoming signals to 1080i, or in rare cases to 960i or 480P.

All pixel based TVs such as LCDs, DLPs, Plasmas, can only display the signal in the number of pixels they have (their native display mode). This is typically 768P, but can also be 480P, 540P, 600P, 720P, 788P, 1024P 1080P. Depends on the "pixel count" in the "engine" or display.

Pixel count is not the only important factor when purchasing an HDTV though. How well the upconversion is done, whether the HDTV "bobs" 1080i signals (reduces resolution to 540P before converting to the native resolution), quality, reliability, etc all come into play.

There are a number of theads on the subject in the forums, usually with quite animated discussions

If you have any comments or suggestions for this post, please PM me.
