I purchased a Sony KP51WS510 back in February 17, 2004 at Sears in San Bernardino, CA. I had been happy with it until last Wednesday, May 19 when I noticed a crack on the lower-right-hand-side corner of the TV frame. This crack started with a length of only 2/3 of an inch but it has increased to 3 inches since then. The cracks run from the front of the frame to the right side of the frame.

I’m a very careful person when it comes to my staff, I also live by myself so I know I did not caused the crack and nobody else did. When the delivery guys brought my TV I did not see anything wrong with it; they did not drop it nor hit anything with the TV.
I have not moved the tv since it arrived at my place nor have I touched it and as unbelivable as it may sound, the crack just simply appeared.

Yesterday, Sears send a tv tech to my place to check the tv. He checked to see if there was something putting pressure on the spot where it cracked; he checked to see if the screen wasn’t affected; he checked that the TV was working properly, and he also checked for signs of impact, which he didn’t find anything.
He told me he has not seen a cracked frame where nothing else is damaged. He said that a short circuit may cause the frame to crack or a screw in the wrong place but he did not found anything like that. As far as we both could see, the TV is working perfectly except for the crack on the frame.

His final assessment was that someone might have pulled the frame near the spot where it cracked as if trying to pull the frame away from the screen. I assured him that it was not something I would do and reminded him that I leave by myself.
He then told me that he would ask his supervisor for an ok on a frame replacement but based on his experience, they would more likely say no. He said that I would very possibly have to pay for the replacement myself and it would cost me between $200-$300 dollars.

I need help trying to figure out what happened in order to determine that I’m not at fault and have the warranty cover the replacement. I did not abuse the TV in any way and I don’t feel I have to pay for the replacement for what amount to a defect on production (weak frame). Also, if I do not get the replacement at all, how difficult would it be for me to take the frame out myself and glue the cracked spot and then put it back in the TV? Would gluing the damaged area affect my warranty for future problems? Has anyone had a similar problem and how did you get Sears to cough up the replacement part?

The crack is not affecting the function of my TV and to fix it would be just for cosmetic reasons. However, I’m afraid that the crack would keep on running all the way to the back of the tv and that I would have to deal with a much greater problem later on.

Hi,

I would almost bet that it's the stand or lack there of. Did you buy the stand that matches that model of tv?

This particular model Sony KP51WS510 does not requires a stand that I know of. The speakers section is basically its own stand.
