What do you guys think of this letter I got from Mitsubishi about DVI??
Thank you for contacting Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America, Inc. We are pleased to be able to assist our customers via our website. Here is the information that you have requested:
DVI inputs on some other manufacturers' HDTV monitors (TVs without integrated digital tuners) were announced this year, although those monitors have not yet reached the market. Manufacturers that have announced integrated digital televisions (TVs with built in digital tuners, MPEG-2 decoders and digital video display processors) also include IEEE 1394 connectors on these sets. Quite differently, the Mitsubishi Promise module adds more than just a digital input (IEEE1394) and an integrated digital tuner and display processor to our HD-Upgradeable TVs. The Mitsubishi Promise Module also provides HAVi system control software and a 1394 interface with NetCommand for digital products. Two source products with DVI output have been announced for delivery later in this year, and both are satellite receivers. One of these satellite receivers also has IEEE 1394 connections, and both also have component video outputs. No cable set-top-boxes have been announced with DVI, but many are already being fielded with component video outputs. There is no indication that DVI will become a popular industry standard as a digital connection for televisions. Because IEEE 1394 connections support home recording and networking, Mitsubishi believes that IEEE 1394 is in the best interests of consumers. DVI is designed to be a "dumb monitor" connection, and is exactly that, with digital program data flowing in one direction-toward the display. Both IEEE 1394 and component video still appear to be the industry standards. Based on these factors, there is no plan to change the Promise Module to include a DVI input. So what you guys think? |

I think it's an awesome response. Go Mitsubishi! DVI is the most worthless "innovation" to ever hit consumer electronics.

DVI vs Firewire
I think the key word is that Mitsubishi says that DVI is not the industry standard, so they won't provide a DVI upgrade. What if DVI becomes the industry standard? I agree Firewire is more friendly to the consumer. I hope it wins out, but the major movie studios and directv and dish are on the DVI side. Why not provide both firewire and dvi for the promise module and the satellite set top boxes. Would this be possible? I haven't bought a d-vhs player because I can't purchase a firewire upgrade to my tv yet. Directv could face some upset consumers if they down grade the signal to the early adopters that don't have DVI. I couldn't even get DVI if I wanted it through Mitsubishi. I only want the best picture with the least cables. I might record some local off air HDTV sports but I would rather buy HDTV d-vhs tapes of movies. It's too bad the movie industry doesn't understand they can't sell these movies to me if I don't buy a d-vhs player, and I won't buy a d-vhs player until I get my promise upgrade. Lastly, what's the deadline on the promise module. What good is a promise module if you can't buy it. Is it delayed because Mitsubishi is thinking of adding the DVI?
