I was told that if you have a STB without IEEE, you could still record a HiDef(1080i) signal on the JVC D-VHS by utilizing a HD S-Video cable from the STB S-Video out - to the JVC S-Video in?? Has anyone else heard this or tried this??

You cannot record an HD signal without the firewire connection. That is the only way.
The S-Video connection would allow you to record at S-VHS resolution, which is 400 lines, while HD is 720P or 1080i. (Standard VCRs record at 240 lines.) See the third and fifth paragraphs in This Link They do make mention of a picture format converter, which allows you to view HD on an SD TV (480i). Why anyone would spend $1k for a VCR and watch it on a $250 TV is beyond me.

Your TV doesn't need a firewire connection, only the recording device & the STB, if you're getting the signal from a STB. Your current SA3100HD doesn't have firewire out, but future STBs may (like the SA3250HD, but only if enabled by the cable company.
