Wouldn't this whole DVI/HDCP issue be null in void if a DVI-component input transcoder product could be manufactured?

All that would be necessary would be a limited number of transcoders be manufactured for all the HDTV ready sets out there without DVI inputs. You would have to submit your TV set's serial # to the manufacturer, where they would verify your name and address and send you a DVI--> component transcoder.

And for protection of signal to satisfy MPAA, this transcoder could add a few 'signature' dots in the corner of the signal (which would all be invisible due to overscan on practically all sets). This signature would be then recognized by all compliant recording devices as 'unrecordable' content.

What about this idea? Its not unrealistic, and its about as 'reliable' of a protection scheme as any other idea. It'll satisfy the early adopters. You won't see DVI inputs on many smaller (under 34") HDTV sets for a while anyway. Are these DVI inputs all HDCP compliant already, anyway?
