DVI - # of connections?

I know it's not all settled yet, but more devices seem to be coming out with DVI connectors. Many RPTV as well as satellite STBs.
So for the moment, let's run with DVI being the way to go...

Is there any foresight or knowledge as to how we will need or be able to deal with multiple DVI sources? All I see are RPTV's with a single DVI input. Do you think there will likely be a splitter box or maybe a DVI distributor or maybe we'll start seeing AV receivers with multiple DVI in and a single DVI out (similar to how component is dealt with today)

I ask this because IF DVI becomes the standard, and since it is not chainable/networkable like firewire, how will we likely connect our 1) sat HDTV PVR, 2) OTA STB and 3) our eventual HD-DVD to a TV that we bought yesterday that only has 1 DVI input?

again...all a big IF, but...

Shouldn't be much need for multiple DVI - only need for copyrighted material that you want to "record", so you run your STB to a DVD/firewire "recording device" to the DVI TV. All other stuff can remain as is.

Many people will switch to cable/satellite STB/HDPVR, so even that cable between the STB and recording device goes away, leaving one connection to the TV from the STB/HDPVR - example SA8000HD.

OTA probably won't be scrambled.

You bring up a good point though if someone needs more...as in the future - two to three years away with HDDVD. I guess we'll worry about that then, or use component video for the HDDVD...

thanks 57U - that all sounds plausible...I DO ponder the rumors that, since THEY are trying to implement some sort of copy protection/encryption, the component outs might get limited to 480P. Not that 480P is "bad", but it sure wouldn't allow HD-DVD to shine.

None of this is going to force me to prolong my HDTV purchase. I want to start enjoying NOW, regardless.

thanks for the input

Lightbulb

In order to display onscreen menus from an audio receiver on a DVI connected HDTV, it will need a DVI (Sony will have one by late April). Since ultrablue/violet DVD, D-VHS, Stand alone HDTV OTA and PVR will also want to maintain encryption, they will require a DVI connection as well. Since all these sources have digital Dolby 5.1 audio connections, any routing will probably go through the receiver making the single DVI connection to the monitor adequate.

So it seems the answer is to have a DVI equipped receiver. So maybe this is the year when they will be introduced.

HDMI will probably be the connector of choice for Receivers, DVD players, D-VCRs, etc. HDMI allows for the transmission of audio over the TMDS link, whereas DVI does not. So connecting a system together with HDMI is a much cleaner solution (i.e. no need to run separate audio cables). HDMI also has a much smaller cable, which is similar to a USB cable only larger, that is much more user friendly than DVI.

I would expect DVI to hold on for a year or two and then things will shift to HDMI.

Question HDMI seems to be the way to go

The press releases say that it is backwards capatible with DVI, how is it accomplished if the connector is so much smaller?

Uses the same number of conductors and TMDS. You do not need all 24 pins with a single link TMDS connection. You would need an adapter. You would only get video.

Lightbulb Sony has a DVI a/v receiver out next week

Sony has dealt with the issue of the lack of an on screen menus on its a/v receivers on its latest HDTV monitors and the lack of DVI switches in its flagship ES model to be available next week for $4,500. See http://www.onecall.com/NewAndHot.mpt?ProductID=19688 for the latest.

For 4500 you think it could at least have 3 DVI in.

Right now I got DVI DVD player + DVI STB. I would already max that box out.

Then again I guess that is so you buy the upgraded model year after that which will have 4 DVI connections!
