newbie question on the DVI issue

hi. newbie here contemplating the purchase of a new HDTV. a little bit concerned about buying with this issue looming, but advice has been to jump into the market. it sounds like this whole issue would be a moot point if there was an external decoder box between the STB and the HDTV. input into this box would be DVI or Firewire, and output would be component video. has there been talk of such a module, and if so, would the output be true 1080i?

regards,
