Does anyone have any recommendations as to which progressive scan DVD player I should purchase? I know that there are a lot of models out right now and that number is increasing every day.

The only recommendation I have is that you don't get one of the really cheap ones like Apex, possibly the cheaper Samsungs too. Spend at least $200-250 and you should be fine with any model. Toshiba and Panasonic are usually highly praised. It might be best to get one the same brand as your TV. That way you're more likely to get a good "match".
If your TV manufacturer doesn't make a DVD player or it's not known for quality, choose another then...

Currently, I have a Mitsubishi WS-55819 and a four-year-old Pioneer DV-500 and am dreaming about a new PS DVD player. I have reviewed the specs on many models. How important is the video digital-to-analog conversion spec? I have seen everything from 10-Bit 27 MHz to 12-Bit 108 MHz. How important is a name brand processor like Faroudja? I would like it to have MP3 capabilities. Are SACD and DVD-Audio just bells and whistles or a must? I have not had the privilege of experiencing them yet. Anyone’s opinions would be appreciated.

1. Believe it or not, you may not see a big difference between your old player and a new PS one. So you may wish to hold off until you "need" a new player.
2. If you "need" the bells and whistles of the new players (MP3, SACD, etc), then go ahead. If you're not going to use the features and only need a DVD player, why upgrade at all? 3. In a couple of years, there are going to be HD DVD players available - hold off until then??? Up to you, just providing comments and options.

I have a Mits 65869 and recently bought the Panasonic R62 DVD. The R62 is a progressive scan DVD that reads MP3. It was reatively cheap, $175. The future is HD-DVD but that's a year away. Hope this helps.

So what is the key spec that defines the line between cheap and good PS DVD's? My brother just got a freebie Apex PS player with the purchase of his 51" Toshiba.
I'm looking at the SONY DVP NS755V. My buyers guide just goes over features/outputs/imputs.. I figured if it has 2:3 pulldown they are basically similar.??.. guess not. So what are the key factors so that I get an adequate PS DVD for my soon to bo SONY 57"? thanks. |

I just purchased the Panasonic RP82 after reading nothing but praise from many different sources and have to say I am extremely pleased. I am using it with my Sony KP57WV600 and the picture is phenomenal. I watched my new Minority Report DVD on it last night and was amazed.
I bought it for $230 from Crutchfield. |

I looked into the RP82 it is either discontinued or not going to be in stock til middle January at earliest. It appears that this model is so popular that it has gone the way of Chicken Dance Elmo-impossible to get.

Kevin,
Did you check Crutchfield.com?? I just bought mine less than 2 weeks ago, but could not find it ANYWHERE else. I would be surprised if they have run out of them as well. It really is a great player! |

Crutchfield doesn't even list them on there websight. Doing searches yields many out of stocks for 6-10 weeks...I hope Santa is good to me and brings me the Pioneer 45A 'cause I do not want to wait till Easter for the Rp82.

Yes, all progressive scan players have some type of de-interlacing. In the Panasonic Rp-82's case it uses the Faroudja chip and software. Faoudja is highly rated and use to be only available in highend players and scalers.

After reading posts on the great performance of the Panny RP82, I was hoping to get one. It appears they are very hard to get. I ended up opting for a Panny CP72S. This has the same video section as the RP82. I have it connected to a Mits 42311 and the performance is great!
The only thing I don't like about it is the silver color. They didn't have any that came in black in my area. I am starting to hear rumors that this will be replaced soon. Grab one before they are extinct.Jim |
