Macrovision
previously someone was talking that the apex DVD player wasn't great but it did defeat macrovision. Is there any other higher end units that has a good progressive scan and also defeats macrovision? I have been looking at the Yamaha units. But these are a bit more than I would like to spend ($500-600). I also want the unit to play all cds as well as MP3s. Any inputs would be appreciated

You can purchase an "outboard" video stabilizer that will "defeat" macrovision (probably around $50). Remember that copying for personal use is acceptable, however copying for sale/profit is not.
I assume you're talking about copying to a VHS tape - why anyone would want to do this much, is beyond me since you lose resolution and digital sound...
