Progressive vs Non-progressive with a hdtv

I have noticed that when using my samsung 421 dvd player in progressive mode, that the zoom feature on my samsung 3293 tsl digital tv does not work / not available. When I use the fill screen option on the dvd player the image is horrible, very granular.

However, when the dvd is not selected to progressive output, zoom on the tv can be used and the picture is good.

I can't notice any difference between progressive and non-progressive. I assume the tv is upconverting the 480i dvd signal to 480p.
