After recently purchasing this unit, I am ready to dive deeper into properly adjusting this for optimum PQ. I've already backed off the contrast somewhat, but I think more can be done. BTW, this is also the first time I've been able to use my 5109 Tosh. DVD player in "progressive scan".

I am a bit befuddled...the projector manual says that certain adj. settings will only be available in certain modes- for instance, I want to adjust sharpness, and this is only available in video mode, not in 480p. Chroma, and a few other things are the same way. What do I do? Run my DVD player in 480i mode (or generic video) and tweak these settings (using DVE) and then revert back to 480p after I have everything dialed in?

This seems like the only logical, even available work-around; but will switching from interlaced to progressive-scan have any bearing on these settings, once adjusted? I would think not, but since using P/S is new to me, I didn't want to make any assumptions.

Is convergence an issue with DLP projectors? Reason I'm asking is, I watched Pirates of the Carribean tonight, and could see what appeared to be some faint 'ghosting' or something like it around certain vertical objects- muskets, for example, as Jack Sparrow (Depp)chatted with those two nit-wit guards on the pier before trying to steal the ship. Onscreen Texts could be a bit sharper, too. This looks like a convergence issue you'd see on a CRT that needed some adjustment.

Hey Crunch,

Have you checked out the AVS forums. There's a section there dedicated purely to SP4805 users. And according to some of the posts I've read there, your better off feeding the 4805 with a 480i signal and letting the Fouroudja processor do all the work. Yous should check it out. tons of info for us 4805 owners.

P.S.

I finally managed to get the firmware upgrade into my unit about half an hour ago. Even without having to call Infocus. I just started the whole process over from scratch and it went off without a hitch. If you get a chance, be sure to do the upgrade. It gives you a few more options for control over the unit, and supposedly fixes some of the switching bugs. I haven't checked to see if it fixed the presets control yet, but will shortly.

No, not on one chip projectors like yours.

MJ- thanks, I didn't think so. I'll see what happens when I dial in the PJ better. I think I'm also going to use Boink's advice, and use the 4805's onboard Faroudja processor...but I am getting the Denon DVD-3800 with the Silicon Image processor...hmm...

Crunch, Good job brother! Did you notice some of the enhancements in the service menu...

RGB GAIN... where before there was only RGB OFFSET. Still haven't checked to see if user presets actually take now. Will do that here shortly. I tried saving a user preset last night per some calibration suggestions from projectorcentral.com as a starting point. Will use DVE disc for final setup.

Well, my screen finally arrived about an hour ago. Hung that sucker faster than poop thru a goose! One word..."AWESOME!!!"

Good thing the screen finally showed up. The whole gang is due here for x-mas in about 2 hours. Now I get to show off the new home theater and be the envy of everyone.

Tonite after dinner, we'll surprise everyone with a movie on the 92" screen!
