InFocus 4805 display anomalies?

I posted this over at the AVS forum, but thought this may bear repeating over here due to the 4805's popularity. Some of you are finding these issues with your 4805's and one or more users over at AVS thought this was a defect- so I decided to address this issue as a user and post my remedy and thoughts about it:

Having the 4805 for just a few weeks, and after calibrating it with DVE, I am continued to be amazed with this PJ. That being said, a few days ago, what appeared to be fingerprints on the display (seen with dark images) that had never been seen before had me concerned. I cleaned the lens carefully with camera Lens-cleaning fluid and lens tissues after the PJ cooled.

No change. After further investigation, I decided to brave an 'internal search' for the culprit. I'll say first off, that this is an easy fix; however, one that must be done with a reasonable amount of care. Just follow the directions for bulb replacement that are contained in the user's manual. And, make sure the bulb has had a chance to cool down entirely.

After unplugging your DVD/VideoSource and A/C connections, carefully remove the access panel, unplug the wire connector for the bulb assy., totally loosen the two screws, and gingerly pull the bulb assembly straight out.

It all comes out in a contained box made of what appears to be some sort of hi-temp synthetic material; whatever it is, you will find that there is a thick prism or glass at the end of the box that faces the color wheel. On each side of the box, at near the end towards the prism- are two metal screens: one on each side. These allow the PJ's fan to pull air through the lens' box assy and cool the bulb. Clean the screens gently with either a camera dust/brush, or gently wipe them with a bristle brush attachment on your vaccum cleaner.

After having done that, take your camera lens solution, and tissue, and gently wipe the exterior prism clean. Follow-up once more with a dry tissue.

One more thing- you will notice that there are a few screws holding the bulb-box assy together, and a few springs holding the screens and bulb into position. I would, at ALL costs, resist the urge to disassemble this. (!!) You may, at best, learn new naughty swear words- at worst, you've just cost yourself another $400.

NOW: IF you are satisfied that there are no smears, etc; you are ready to put it back together. Just gently guide the bulb-box back into the PJ, and don't force it. It will go where it's supposed to- if you have it aligned correctly. IF you have to force it, pull it back out and start over. Once seated into place, securely tighten ( don't overtighten!) the screws, insert the wire plug for the bulb, and carefully replace the access cover.

Ba-Da bing! You are done.

For those viewing this dust situation as a fault or defect- I don't. I feel this is more of a occasional 'maintenence issue'. We had recently done some cleaning and moving things around in the den where the PJ is used- thus stirring up dust. Until it's all gone, your fan is certainly going to pick some of this up- and I don't care what PJ or gear you have...a fan is going to draw whatever airborne dust is around, plain and simple. If anybody has any ideas for air filtration on the 4805, I'm all ears.

So there you are. Hope this helps.

This is just my humble take on the issue as a layman and basic user- not someone involed in the industry side of the issue itself. So take it for what it's worth, but if this helps...YAY!!
