Advent 27" - Great Picture but other problems
We purchased the 27" Advent HDTV right before christmas from Best Buy.
The picture was tremendous when connected our our HD Cable DVR and to the DVD progressive scan. BUT we have 2 big problems, if i do not solve them i will be taking the TV back... First: The remote is limited in the machines that it can be programmed for- so our DVD player will not work with it or the VCR or the Cable box. And the advent is not easily programmed with in the DVDE remote or CAble box remote... I did get the cable box remote to work with volume and power. But that is livable though my spouse has HUGE issues with more than one remote... And that is almost unlivable..... But the problem that is not livable is that the operation of other remotes or even my Laptop do odd things to the Advent TV and a some things on the Advent TV play havic with out VCR and DVD. For instance changing inputs sometimes but not always turns on the VCR or turns it off.... But the big problem is that some of the TV remote buttons cause problems with the VCR. We were watching a tape and the TV kept changing inputs or channels. Some was because of the VCR remote, such as pause or fast forward but my laptop also made the TV change from Channel 3 to 4 abd back. Because of this i ran the VCR through the DVD which is also A DVD recorder -- The VCR picture was INCREDIBLE since it was going through the component cables of the DVD -but again since i am not going straigh to the tv it makes it more confusing for my wife to setup because now the input of the dvd has to be set and then the tv. She is like the women in the Movie BABY BOOM - I don't care how the water gets there - i just want to turn on the faucet and get water. The Second problem is the biggest problem the monitor A/V output that is listed to be used to record on the vcr or to go to an external amplifier - do not work with component or progressive scan inputs - the AV output only works with the coax input or the standard video or svideo output. Because of the above problems we only have the progressive or component video hookups. In the past our old 27" tv had AV out that went to our hidden Stereo and the sound came out of the TV and the stereo speakers and both were controlled by the TV volume. Now i had only stereo output if i used the poorest video connects and no volume control.... My wife was so frustrated i almost had to take this set back at the end of the day on Christmas EVE and Best Buy was 45 minutes away.... But i then realized we had a headset output on the side. so i had the cable to go from headset jack to RCA cables and that works for the stereo and the volume is controlled by the TV volume but there is a slight hum on the stereo and the TV speakers do not work when the headset jack is plugged in... I have tried calling there support but have been "put on ignore" for some time and so hung up and will try again later today. If i do not solve these issues because this is the TV my lovely spouse uses most of the time i am at work or traveling- Then the TV goes back. NO matter how great the TV.. ...We have a 48" Mitsibishi Widescreen HDTV downstairs and we love it and the audio out put works for all inputs though the volume has to be controlled with two remotes _the home theater and the tv--- it is works great. I realize this TV cost about 1/4" of what i paid for that but i do expect to have less Remote issues and to have the Audio out put work for all inputs. That is my saga.... I would recommend this only to people with an HD source and maybe a DVD and no stereo output. Then i think this is a great bargain. |

Sounds like you need a good macro remote like the cool ones from Harmony so all you would need/use is 1 re,ote. I bet that would make the spouse VERY happy.
As for the audio out, some TVs have this (running the TV speakers as well as the line out jacks to your stereo) and some do not. This is where the term 'you get what you pay for' comes into play. I must ask though, why on earth would you want the sound to come from the stereo AND the TV at the same time (If I read your post correctly). Advent is not a bad TV and it is not a great TV, but the price reflects this theory.

You did read my post correctly.... The issue is that it is what my Lovely spouse wants that is driving this. The speakers on the TV set are ok but not great - and I am happy I was able to connect the audio to the Stereo through the HEadset connection for all situations and the output is controlled by the tv volume. But my wife was frustrated that she could not have both the stereo and the TV and i do not think logic is the issue here..... I had it setup on our old tv so that she had the stereo and the tv speakers and that she had the volume controlled from the TV... So she wants what she had..... And i am not going to say "SO - what does that have to do with this tv - we got a better picture." But i do have a slight hum i have to work on.. I think that is a cable issue- but overall i feel the headset connection solved all my problems. Anyway... My preference is to get the audio output with an HD component hookup and then get a glass cabinent for the stereo so she can control the sound for the stereo or the TV. But i am having trouble selling that idea too her. And right now the audio output does not come from a component hookup but i am working with support on that issue to see if that is solvable. The whole reason i bought this tv is that i wanted an HDTV upstairs where she spend alot of her time- Also because she is not always wanting to pick up what she is working on to go downstairs to watch our tv on our bigscreen. We usually watch Movies or HD programming on the weekends on the bigscreen but the upstairs is her domain and i need to folllow her lead. A big master remote is not likely to solve the problem with the cross signals between the vcr commands and the dvd commands and the tv commands is it? I will say that even for a $400 TV this HD picture is incredibly good and i am very happy with that. But on the rest i do agree- you get what you pay for. Have a happy new year..... kpr ![]() |

I think a good "learning" universal remote would solve some of your problems. You can set "volume punch through" meaning that you can always have the volume control the stereo, for instance, regardless of what other device you are currently controlling (more it is set in). THis would always let your wife be able to push the same volume buttons and not have to shive modes on the remote. If you really want to customize your remote, do a google search for JP1 and you'll learn about this wonderful technology. It's not hard to do.
Secondly, check out the posts in this thread. I think there were other people who had similar audio out issues and got a response directly back from Advent: http://www.hdtvmagazine.net/board/i...act=ST&f=2&t=73 Hope that helps. It's really a great TV. I hope your wife can get onto a few new things. Rachel |
